A random thought popped in my head today.

The internet is a fairly new thing, although it's been around my entire life. The first time I found out there were others like me was a curious google images search when I was 12. I assume there may still be some people, possibly from the older generation, that have similar feelings we do that have no idea that a whole community exist.

So my question is: Do you think that people like us have existed throughout time to a certain degree? I don't want to label this as fetish because I know not all of us fall under that category. I know that they didn't have the modern technology we have today, either. For example, I know that my grandfather referred to something called a "sugar t*t" as something like a pacifier. It was some form of a bag filled with sugar which a baby could suckle on. Disposable diapers didn't exist. I wonder though, if people thought history had any association with babyhood or AB/DL/little types of behavior.

I found a french reference to ABDL that was nearly 100 years old. I have no idea where to dig it up again, but I'd venture to say that since there were diapers and plastic pants, there have been adults who deviated from the norm and wore them.

they probably existed, though possibly less so than today due to lack of spare time.

It's hard to say how long it might have been going on. I tend to think that as a kink, it's probably relatively recent in our history (say the last 100 years or so). My reasoning is that prior to that children didn't have much of a childhood as we would currently think of it and babies, while cared for also appear to be kept at more of an emotional distance due to the risks of death. It's not hard for me to believe that the idea of being doted over by someone caring might go back a very long ways but I'm less sure it would be so directly tied to the world of babies and children as we tend to do.

I'm sure it existed in the past, just probably not quite as we know it today due to changes in technology etc. I think it's also important for the discussion to understand why people are in to abdl stuff. Or at least, understand that there are different underlying reasons. For some people it's an emotional thing an about being cared for, in others it's more of a power exchange kind of dynamic, and for other people it may just be a pure object fetish. Or maybe some combination.

I would suspect that 100 years ago different people who would be abdl today would be into different things back then. E.g. the person for whom it was fulfilling an emotional need might still be an abdl, just with all the trappings of a 1900s era baby, whereas the power play person might go for whatever passed for bdsm back then and the object fetish person might just be SOL (or maybe develop a fetish for a different object instead)

I've found provocative photos of women wearing diapers dating back to at least the 1950s. One of my favorites is a collection of black and white photos of a woman bound in a straight jacket over a cloth diaper and plastic pants. I'm sure if someone really dug and did some research they'd be able to uncover many references and case studies throughout the 20th century and perhaps even earlier.

I think the use of diapers, and historically they would have been cloth, is only a couple of hundred years old. It would be impossible to have a diaper fetish before diapers were invented. There still might have been a pants wetting fetish and other related fetishes involving bodily waste.

Funny story. I actually came across an old, black-and-white pornographic film of a woman wearing a diaper. Old-timey jazz soundtrack and everything. Can't link it here, for obvious reasons. So unless its fake (and it would be a lot of effort to do so), its clear its been around for awhile.

Can you post those anywhere? Sounds intriguing!

Yes ABDL absolutely existed before the internet. I'm old enough to have grown up before AOL started mailing out cd's (for those who remember), and I was a DL before even that.

I just though I was the only one, that's all. And since I never made the news paper as being a DL, I'm certain a lot of people felt the same way. The advent of the internet didn't lead to adults liking diapers it only increased our knowledge that others do too.

Dogboy brings up a good point. Before diapers, we're there infantilists? It makes you wonder what is our root or base desire? Is it directly connected to an object? I've been trying to deconstruct my own feelings and desires (I can only speak for myself). Do I desire to wear diapers because I only like diapers. Or is the wearing of something 'forbidden' paramount to my desire?

I'm sure men have been cross dressing for centuries. If we take that as an example women's clothing has changed drastically over time. A cross dresser's options 200 years ago might not be appealing to the cross dresser of today. Similarly, baby attire/paraphernalia of 200 years ago might seem unappealing to us now, but to the adult baby of 1750, a loose cotton gown and a wooden teether are all one needs.

Thoughts?
