Thread: ISP advice

    Default ISP advice

OK, I need a bit of advice. Do to problems with and the attitude of my cable company I am going to be terminating my service with them.

So what I need to do is to replace both my television provider and my internet provider.

Unfortunately there is no cable competition where I live.

So if anyone out there is not using cable internet, what are you using and how well does it work?

I have AT&T Low Speed DSL.
It's god-awful. The connection has a tendency to drop, and their customer service is terrible.

I have Verizon adsl 3Mbps/768kbps. It's pretty decent.

I have AT&T with their "elite" DSL thing, their speed's are good for DSL at least. However it won't be as good as cable.

I have Dish Network and their pricing is maybe the most decent out of all of the cable/sat companies.

Working for an unnamed dsl ISP, which is claimed decent. I can highly assure you that behind the scenes DSL is a mess of a system, and on average slower then cable. I would never use it, or recommend it personally if cable is available in the area. Unless fibre is available in your are, if so, go with that and I'm extremely jealous.

For the sake of curiosity, what happened that prompted the want for termination?

My ISP kicks ass though, no contract, 7.5m downloads for $40 a month. Shaw is awesome.

Even if it is like 40 dollars more per month?

Do you have Qwest in your area?
I have Comcast, which I hate, but some of my friends who have high-speed Qwest DSL (up to 20mbps depending on how much you pay) say that it is decent.

Jesus tap dancing christ. Looked up the company, and it seems they're the ones that service most of the states my ISP doesn't. Thats some pretty hefty pipe they're swinging.

<Edit> They actually look like they have a decent infrastructure.

<Edited edit>No seriously, how have they not kicked my company over the horizon

To be honest since I don't play on line games, and don't do a lot of downloading, a slower speed won't kill me.

It's been a series of things that reached an apex today. Recent events include someone working for them pushing the Emergency Alert System test button every 5 minutes for 90 minutes. When I contacted them about this, they lied and said that the FCC sends out the tests. I contacted the FCC and they sent me the rules about the tests. This evening I went to watch a movie and found that all of the movie channels I have were experiencing technical difficulties. When I called to find out what the problem was, the person on the other end, basically said they caused the problem and couldn't fix it. The attitude was too bad, I'm not even going to try to help you. Interestingly no supervisors were available either.

Sounds like you were dealing with comcast support.

I really don't get how people can be terrible at that job, considering I do it myself. It's incredibly easy, and I deal with business's where the internet actually matters.

Just for the record, though I don't know if this applies to your ISP's field techs as well. They're union. Working for the company I do has bread a strong disliking for unionized workers, which is an irony considering my typical socialist democratic political ties. Unions protect incompetence and laziness. >.>
