Yes, Arthur Conan Doyle was the author, in the 1800's I think. I love the stories and many of the movies that were made, some even as spin-offs. I believe however, that it was Edgar Allen Poe who invented through his writing, the first real criminal investigation in "Murders in the Rue Morgue", another great story. Both authors broke a lot of new ground.
