Becoming incontinent is a huge, permanent step. If you decide that you want to become incontinent and stick with it, it will be a decision that affects you for the rest of your life.

Many AB/DLs fantasize about a life entirely dependent on diapers. The pleasurable feeling of them and their convenience is often extremely enticing. But it's very easy to be fooled. Diapers can make for an extremely inconvenient lifestyle.

Why?

It isn't rare for AB/DLs to fantasize about being incontinent. Urinary incontinence might be expected to offer a sense of helplessness, as one realizes that he or she has already started wetting and can't stop. It might also involve surprise, as one awakes to a wet diaper he or she doesn't remember wetting. Others might see it as a progression, the next step toward real babyhood. Still others might involve it as a way to resolve guilt in fantasy: He or she is free of the guilt of fantasizing about being in diapers, since the diapers are necessary for a fantasized case of incontinence. Fecal incontinence is also common in fantasy. These are reasons that AB/DLs fantasize about being incontinent. For the majority of AB/DLs, incontinence remains a fantasy.

Why not?

Wearing diapers 24/7 or becoming incontinent may not be as fun or amazing as you think it is. Keep in mind that this is a lifestyle choice you are making and, consequently, you will have to change your daily routine to fit in this new aspect. Before shifting into this new lifestyle, consider talking to and getting information from someone who actually is incontinent, they might just change your mind about it. There are a handful of incontinent people on ADISC and the forum features an Incontinence board, but please search the forum first before asking as this topic comes up often. It is recommended that if decided to do this to yourself that you spend at least three months simulating this lifestyle. This means letting go of yourself whenever or where ever you feel the urge, diapered or not (public scenes aside). Also committing to your lifestyle as described below.

There are quite a number of points to consider before trying to make yourself incontinent.

  • Your Diaper Bag. You have to carry one with you everywhere. Period. You have no control over when you eliminate waste, so you have to be able to change at all times. You will always have to carry spare diapers and changing essentials, which is not only a hassle but leaves you more vulnerable to being found out.
  • Peers & Society. While incontinence is a medical issue and most people will be understanding of your condition, there are still quite a number of people who will ridicule, tease and harass you about it. Diapers are associated with babies and the things they do in them, so being found out could expose you to daily insults, torment, or exclusion. This can affect your self-confidence and self-esteem, quite drastically, and for the worse.
  • Public Consideration. "The stink factor". Like it or not, your poop and urine stink, and if it's deposited in your pants while you're out and about, people will smell it. It's just common courtesy and common sense not to offend people with ghastly odors emitted from your body, notably at places where people gather, are confined or eat. The smell of urine is less of a problem, especially with all the odor-neutralizing chemicals they put in disposable diapers nowadays, but it can still be as persistent as poop. For more information, please see this article
  • Cleanup & Leaks. When it's time to change, you have to find a public restroom or other private place, change yourself and deposit the used diaper in the nearest trash can. If there is no bin available, you will have to carry around the soiled diaper in your diaper bag until you can access one. So that means carrying around plastic bags as well, which cause noise and could rouse people's curiosity if loud enough. You also have to clean yourself thoroughly as to avoid rash or other symptoms of exposure to bodily wastes. If you decide to put off a change, your diaper will probably leak and you'll end up with wet pants and possibly a wet seat. This will be both a hassle and an embarrassment for you, not to mention highly unhygienic.
  • Body Health. It is unhealthy for you to lose control of any body function and your bladder/bowel are no exceptions. Untraining your muscles may lead to permanent, irreversible damage. Even if you plan on being incontinent for "just a short period of time", the possible long-term outcomes might not be what you wanted.
  • Drug & Pharmaceuticals. Introducing any foreign substance to your body is bound to have effects. Most medicines nowadays were developed to be used with few negative side-effects. However, abuse might bring with it more and worse side-effects. Muscle relaxants, diuretics or enemas should not be taken unless prescribed by a medical professional for a genuine case. Needlessly taking these chemicals may result in bodily damage and even death.
  • Finances & Cost. Diapers cost money. You will be stuck footing the bill for them unless a physician can find a genuine cause for your incontinence, and even then you will still have to pay some money. Considering you'll be wearing diapers 24/7, paying for diapers becomes a sizable part out of your budget. If you don't factor diapers into your budget and/or can't afford to constantly purchase diapers, you may hit dire-straits financially. Plus it'll leave you incontinent and without protection.
  • Fetish & Fun. Undoubtedly, you wish to become incontinent because you are a diaper lover or just generally practice infantilism. Diapers are fun every so often to indulge yourself in your fetish, but having to wear them all the time makes diaper-wearing much less of a fetish & fun experience and more of a chore. Incontinence takes the choice out of wearing them. Instead of wearing them when you want, you'll have to wear them all the time, regardless of whether or not you want to indulge. Constant wearing can bore you of them and will defeat the purpose of the wanting to wear 24/7 in the first place.
  • Comfort. If you've worn diapers for any prolonged period of time, you will probably know just how uncomfortable they can get - especially in the warmer months. Whilst modern diapers are designed with comfort and breathe-ability in mind, the technology still isn't perfect. Sweating in diapers can lead to rash and general skin irritation, which can make it painful to wear diapers for a period of time. Although there are creams available, the best cure is prevention, which in this case means not wearing diapers 24/7. If you are incontinent, you'll have no choice in the matter and you will always be running the risk of discomfort and persistent irritation.
  • Travel & Adventure If you're travelling for a prolonged period of time, you will have to carry around enough spares to last you the duration of your trip. Depending on where you are travelling to, diaper availability may be much lower than your local region, so extra consideration in packing your luggage will have to be taken. This may involve having to pack quite a large number of diapers, which not only takes up space and adds extra weight to your baggage, but if you are travelling with other people it greatly increases the risk of exposure. Furthermore, there is the possibility of not being able to change for a while, especially if you are in a public area, constantly on-the-go and/or private facilities are not readily available. This means wearing the diaper for extended periods of time which will adversely affect your health, hygiene and comfort. If you are Traveling to another country you will have to have your diapers screened if not declared by customs, if they get suspicious you may have to show medical papers.

In short, there's not much possibility that you'll be able to become incontinent and not have people find out about it. If you're telling your boss, he or she is probably required by law to not discriminate against you because of this, especially because incontinence usually has some direct medical cause associated with it. However, the impact on your social network, and ultimately your confidence and self-esteem, could be disastrous. Purposely becoming incontinent will affect your lifestyle greatly and will generally change your life. It is not a decision you should make "just because", you should definitely put much thought into it.
