Editing Help

Wait, you mean I can edit this site?

Yes, you can. There should be an "Edit" link at the top of most pages, and clicking it will allow you to edit the text of pages. If the link does not show up, please check that :

  • You are logged into our forum before you visit the wiki. You have to be logged in to edit anything here.
  • Your account is in good standing. This means you must have confirmed your email address or been manually activated by the forum admin, and you must not be banned or moderated.

If you have checked both the above but still find yourself unable to edit, please post a thread in the requests forum asking why you can't edit the wiki.

How should I use the editing feature?

To contribute your knowledge so that other AB/TB/DL/IC/etc people can learn something from you. For example, you might contribute your knowledge about :

  • diapers (by writing diaper reviews)
  • countries (by writing information about where to get diapers in that country)
  • AB items (by explaining where you can get them)
  • behaviour (by explaining what is safer (diapers) and more dangerous (enemas))

... or anything else which you think others would want to know about.

Can you explain the basics of editing?

Sure :)

  • When logged in, you will see an "edit" link at the top of most pages.
  • Clicking on this link will give you a huge text box with the contents of the page inside it.
  • By changing the text in the page, and clicking "Save page", you will change the contents of the page.
  • After changing the page, everyone else will see what you changed the page to.

That's it!

Can I test this out?

Sure, just go to the Sandbox, and edit away freely until you get the hang of it.

Ok, what about intermediate level editing? Links, images, etc?

Here are some tips for more intermediate level editors :

  • Hit "Show preview" at the bottom of the page when editing it. This will display what the page would look like with your changes, but won't actually save the page. This is handy as you can keep using preview until you are satisfied with the way the page looks, at which point you can save it.
  • Blue links lead to pages which exist. Generally, you can still edit these pages.
  • Red links lead to pages which don't exit, but you can easily create them by following the link, adding some text, and hitting "Save Page".
  • To create a new link to a page within this wiki, simply enclose the name of the page you wish to link to inside double square brackets ("[" and "]") on the text of any existing page. Once saved, it will turn into a link. You can check that you have done it correctly using the "Show Preview" button after editing the new link into the page. For example, putting two "["s to the left and two "]"s to the right of the word "ExamplePage" (like this: [[ExamplePage]] leads to this link : ExamplePage
  • To create a new link to a page somewhere else on the web, use a SINGLE square opening bracket ("["), the full URL of the page you wish to link to (e.g. "http://www.google.com"), a space (" ") a name for the link (e.g "Google"), and a SINGLE closing square bracket ("]"). Taken together, this: [http://www.google.com Google] you will get something like this : Google.
  • To create a new page within the wiki, edit an existing wiki page, adding an internal link to the page you want to create. Once saved, it will produce a RED link, as the new page doesn't exist yet. Clicking on the red link, however, will allow you to create the new page by putting some text into it.
  • You can use the "Recent Changes" link (top left of this page) to see what edits other people are making.
  • You can use three apostrophes, ('s) on each side of a word or phrase, '''like this''', and the word or phrase will appear in bold.
  • You can use two apostrophes, ('s) on each side of a word or phrase, ''like this'', and the word or phrase will appear in Italic
  • You can combine those two as much as you want. like '''''BoldItalic''''' BoldItalic '''''BoldItalic'' and the last bit bold''' BoldItalic and the last bit Bold
  • You can use equals signs to turn text into headers and sub-headers. "= Text =" on a line by itself is the page title, "== Title ==" on a line by itself is the title of a section of the page, "=== Subtitle ===" on a line by itself forms a sub-section in the page, etc. By using equals signs in this way, you can not only break a page up into logical sections, but the wiki will also generate a table of contents for you at the top of the page, which makes it easier to read.
  • You can go into edit mode on pages like this one to look at the way they are constructed. Doing this allows you to learn from the edits that other people have made. Please bear in mind though that you shouldn't edit this particular page when learning to edit... use the Sandbox page for that. The reason for this is that this Editing Help page has to be kept reliable as people use it often to figure out how to edit.

This may seem complex at first, but the basics of editing are simple, and you will find that it is easy to learn if you get stuck in and start experimenting with it. If you've ever written HTML, or a foreign language, or used BBCode on a forum, you will have an especially easy time picking this up. The key is to go slowly, experiment, and learn from others by going into edit mode on their pages, so that you can see the source and understand how their pages were made.

Advanced Editing

For further information on wiki syntax you can use, check out Wikipedia's article on the subject. Most of the formatting listed there will work on the ADISC wiki. That page is a very good one to go to, because it gives detailed examples of how to use almost all of the wiki's common formatting methods... everything from links to images to lists and subheaders.

Short Editing Tips

  • You can use Special:Wantedpages to find out which pages people would like created, but have not been created yet. Why not start off one of these wanted pages?
  • You can use Special:Lonelypages to find pages which are not linked to from any other page. Why not take one, find a page that relates to it, and place a link to it on that related page? If this is not done, the page probably won't be read.
  • You can use Special:Deadendpages to find pages with no outgoing links. It is a good idea to add some outgoing internal links to these pages.
  • You can use Special:Categories to find out which categories exist in the wiki, and put place Category:CATEGORYNAME inside double square brackets to include a page in a category. E.g, to include this page in the category "helpful", add "Category:Helpful" inside two sets of square brackets, to the page. Good examples of categories include things like diaper brands, and articles intended for people living in a specific country.
  • You can use Special:Shortpages to find short pages that could benefit from expansion, and Special:Longpages to find long pages which might benefit from being split into smaller pages.
  • You can use Special:Allpages to get a list of all pages in the wiki. Use this if you're trying to find a place to contribute, but not having any luck yet.
  • You can use Special:Listusers to get a list of the people registered on the wiki, and more easily find user pages.
  • You can use Special:Upload to upload files (e.g. images) to the wiki.

Is there anything I shouldn't put on the wiki?

The standard ADISC rules apply to the wiki as well. That means :

  • No porn.
  • No images of anyone under 18.
  • No being mean to other people.

There are also a few things which we particularly don't want on the wiki :

  • The wiki is not meant for long discussions (use the forum for these instead)
  • The wiki is not meant for lots of images (use the gallery for these instead)
