Advice for ADISC newbies

From ADISC Answers Wiki

Hello, and welcome to ADISC.org.

This article covers the basics, such as the unwritten conventions we have, and tips on how to integrate well with the community.

Contents

Am I too Old, too Young?

There is no age requirement for ADISC, and people of all ages can sign up. When you sign up, it is necessary for you to enter your date of birth. This must be accurate, as anyone caught lying about their age gets a permanent ban from ADISC, and the vast majority of liars are caught. You can set your profile so only yourself and moderators of the site can see your age. To do this, see your User Control Panel's Edit Profile section.

You should be aware, however, that the vast majority of the people here are in the 16 to 26 age range, with most in the 16-22 age range. Do not be deterred, though, if you are outside this range. Many users welcome all members and there are some people on ADISC who are far outside this range. Provided your intentions are pure and you adhere to the site rules, you'll be welcomed into the community.

Making an Introduction

Posting an introduction is a good way to start off in the community. It helps you meet people, and if you put substantial effort into your introduction, you can get reputation points. So, putting a little effort into your introduction is a very good idea! See the How to Make an Introduction article for tips on making the best first impression.

More than just a Forum

ADISC has more than just a forum. It has many other features, such as :

  • Live Chat in an IRC channel
  • Blogs, where members talk about their lives
  • A Gallery with pictures uploaded by members
  • This Answers Wiki, with more articles like this one

If you have the time, don't forget to look round these parts.

True Stories

Please bear in mind that we value the truth on ADISC. This means that if you claim something very unlikely has happened to you (say, that you won the lottery, or that your parents baby you, or that you told your wife/girlfriend and she thought it was a great excuse to buy you a crib), etc... then people are unlikely to believe it. If you're going to post stories which seem far-fetched, then expect other forum members not to believe you. There are many people on the internet who mistake fantasy for reality, and if you want to make sure you're not seen as one of those, you should be believable with what you post, especially in your first week. If you do want to post something that is going to sound unlikely to someone else, then at least admit that you know it sounds unlikely, and provide an explanation of why it happened anyway.

Try the chat

The IRC-based channel can be accessed from the "Live Chat" menu on the main site. Put bluntly, a lot of chat tends to happen, and you should take the opportunity to jump in and introduce yourself there. This is the single best way to get to know people and develop friendships with other ADISCers. Be friendly, but also be reasonable and respect the boundaries of others. A/S/L type questions are not likely to receive a good response. Diapers and related topics are discussed there, but it's really more of a meeting place of people with that common interest rather than a channel dedicated to the discussion of that interest.
