Before you do anything, you'll need the games from either Steam, GOG, Epic, or a physical CD. Don't bother launching them from the actual game launcher you've bought them from, there's a better way: source ports.

GZDOOM is great for any doom engine game. Can play: Ultimate Doom, Doom 2, Final Doom, Heretic, Hexen, Strife, and Chex Quest 3 (free download, btw). It can read the game files from your Steam folders.

Tons of mods with just this source port, extract the folder after downloading, then drag & drop the WAD file you want to play, and select the correct game for that mod.

Doom mods start here:

ECWOLF: Plays Wolfenstein 3D & Super 3D Noah's Ark.

Build GDX: Plays Duke Nukem 3D, Blood, Redneck Rampage, Shadow Warrior, Witchaven 1 & 2, and Powerslave.
Take the files out of the folder & put them in the GDX folder. Wherever you put that folder.

Note if you wanna get Duke 3D's official expansions, they're only available on ZOOM, as far as I know.

If you're really into shooters, this quick guide can help you into hours of fun. (I don't own any of these sites, but they're all secure)
Thousands of Doom mods, especially.
