Yesterday I came on here to figure out what the best cheap diaper is and everyone agreed it was crinkles, so I went to the site, looked at then decided they weren't for me. I then went to abuniverse and bought 4 cases of diapers and a pack of boosters.

Today I was at work looking at parts needed for my job, and there was an ad for crinkles, not only that, but it had the headline "the best adult baby diapers" thankfully nobody was looking with me but, WOW! WHY would they do that?! They advertise safety and privacy then go and sell my cookies to the highest bidder!??!
Now I have to go intensely look at other stuff to get them to advertise that instead.
Until I get these ads off my phone I can't hand it to anybody. Nobody can look at what I'm looking at, I don't have an excuse for why adult baby diapers being advertised to me.

I have not seen a single advertisement for ABU. I really feel like they care. They treat you nice, and don't sell you data...

Oh the shock! It's like if you were into hardcore poop porn and suddenly you got constant ads for "2 girls 1 cup" while browsing for "lunch near me" or "what movies are playing in my area".

Besides me being into diapers, adult diapers are something adults buy in private it's not something they want to be seen buying, or be associated with.

I can't look at anything anymore, all I see is cute abdl diapers and I can't be going rock solid at work either 👎😎.

I don't think it has anything to do with the website. It's probably Google if you use an Android phone.

Yee this happens a lot with Google. Id end up getting a million Huggies commercials. Thankfully i block most ads through DNS and use ad block on my pc.

This is how it's been for a while and it's getting more sophisticated.

It's just Google tracking. Happens if you searched in Chrome or from the search bar.

Use a non-tracking browser (Ghostery is an example) in the future.

Here's how you clear it off. Should help a bit.

Personally I use DuckDuckGo for my search engine and no issues with iPhone.

Welcome to the problem with tracking cookies and the likes of Google and Facebook in the modern day. This isn't unique to northshore. If you have an Alexa or Google Home, they listen to your conversations as well, and you'll start seeing relevant ads appearing as you browse the web. This isn't new, this has been going on for years.

same here (as far as abdl stuff anyway), by far one of the best methods since regardless of device it doesn't retain search history and blocks trackers

My personal solution was:
  1. Delete my Facebook account;
  2. Delete my Gmail account;
  3. Replace Google with DuckDuckGo.

This is why I NEVER go on northshore unless I’m on a private tab. Because EVERY time I do I have ads for them for a week or so.

It's not just Google. Northshore pays Google to advertise targetedly and because they do that it breaks their privacy statement and I could sue, class action, but they know I won't because I and others like me don't want the world to know about any involvement with their site.

It's like, "Hi! I'm that balding guy next to you on the train that smells because I have a problem and there's something weird about that buldge in my pants."

So I come here and rant...

DuckDuckGo is a good start but won't protect fully. Though bonus points :)

Modern devices are very hard to block to be very honest. Telemetry has been baked in virtually everywhere making it harder to get around the issue. That said, there is a multitude of ways you could've been tracked. Let me give some practical examples:
  • You've been tracked by the built-in Google "start to search in browser bar"
    • Google will track all things you even attempt to search. It performs autocomplete on these things. These things are targeted since your most likely logged in to Android and maby even Chrome.
  • You've been tracked anonymous by random ads on the internet
    • While browsing websites an Google / Meta / MS ad is loaded and now they know (most likely) what you've been looking for. They don't even need to be actively profiling you as they are serving ad on a random website. Then the big G is like "Hmm, it's a little suss I see this guy for the 5th time on a shop selling diapies..."
  • You've been targeted by personal ads
    • They have an indication based on account history (weither it would be out of their own as 3th party websites that do targeted ads.

That said, this is, like said before a normal practice. A few good measures are already said here. Another one would be to switch browsers. Firefox is still one of the best out there that actually respects your privacy... not telling names on others *cough* Brave... *cough*

Things like PiHole that operate on DNS level help eliminate most things. What they don't do is prevent the big techies to capture your interests when you are logged in and browsing bigs sites, not even search engines for that matter. Most ecommerce websites like Amazon are being tracked and you can be sure that they know what your searching.

If you happen to run MIUI(Xiaomi phone) you can use a feature called "Second Space". It allows you to set a full-featured second profile to switch to. Keeping all the telemetry and targeted ads bound to another account

Sadly, that's the state of the internet right now. If your really interested in how to protect yourself further we could talk about it further in messages... this post got a little long here hehe 😅

p.s. would be funny to blurt out loud "Hmm... I HAVE NO CLUE WHY I GOT THIS AD... GEEEEEEEE!" to make it less suss :p

This also happens on iPhone in iOS 15 and not just on Northshore either.

Would love more info on privacy actually! Messages? Surprised Brave isn’t so secure anymore, I had no idea.

I'd love more info on Brave as well. I somewhat assumed? it was relatively secure.

I recommend a non-Chrome browser in incognito mode over a good VPN.

To add on to what many have suggested already (VPN, private browser, etc), also install an adblocker on your browser as well, especially if you're using Chrome.

There will always be a risk of getting ads that you don't want when you don't want them. There's no way around this, really, unless you don't have a smartphone or computer at all.

Others have said it but I'll add to it, a VPN is the way to go. Make sure you get one that you pay for.

Brave is still secure but they always seem to profit off their users in such sketchy ways that I cannot be bothered to find out all the time to what "they have done this time"
