Hello!

I've had nocturia for most of my life and it has been a continuing contributor to my looking at diapers as a potential solution. I hope this isn't offensive to post here because I don't think nocturia counts as "true incontinence" because I can still make it to the toilet. I just wake up 3-4 times a night needing to pee and I think the lack of sleep is really getting to me. I have dark circles under my eyes and I always feel tired. I keep looking into diapers for overnight protection and end up getting too embarrassed and throwing everything out and just go back to getting up to pee several times a night. I have to take a diuretic for a medical condition so I'm pretty sure I know what the cause is as I have talked to my doctor about how much I am having to pee. It's just a thing I will have to try to deal with.

I'm worried that wearing diapers overnight will just be an expensive thing that doesn't actually help. Like, I'm still going to wake up when I have to pee and I don't know if I actually want to be in a position where I don't wake up if I have to pee because then I'd have night time incontinence for real. I don't know what's worse, though, so I came here to ask if anyone got help from diapers for nocturia and if they are sleeping better and feel better during the day? Sometimes, I feel like I would do anything for better sleep, but I don't know if overnight incontinence is worth it.

If it's not worth it, are there other options?

I'm unpartnered and also worry about how having to wear diapers to bed will ruin my chances, but then again I run my own business so I don't really have time for romance in the foreseeable future anyway.

I dunno... I guess any kind of help or direction here would be very much appreciated.

For me, personally, diapers are not helpful for nocturia. I have nights where I have to get up 3-4 times to go. Sometimes I can ignore the urge and stay asleep for a couple more hours until it comes back, other times I can't and just have to go. But I have an obstruction that makes it more difficult to go, so I can't go laying down and have to physically get out of bed anyways. So diapers don't really help with the issue at all for me.

i feel called out here cuz im doing the same, never knew there was a term for it. anyways i dont know how well itd help buuuut if u wear diapers to fix this at night your going to most likely end up with incontinence at night. but for me id rather take bieng a bedwetter than not sleeping well enuff. its all personal preference really but it is possible to train yourself to ignore those urges and wet yourself in your sleep.

only downside is paying for that many diapers which isnt bad if your in a good paying position.

but also try sleeping in a diap just for one night, if you find it comforting then by all means do what makes you happy

A lot of people with nocturia report much better sleep when they stop getting up and wet in bed. If you're at the point where you're considering being wet at night instead of suffering the consequences that result from poor sleep because of your bladder, involuntarily bedwetting kind of solves the whole problem. I used to get up frequently at night (as well as wet the bed), but as I've gotten older I almost always wet in my sleep, and I sleep much better.

There is also a direct connection between nocturia and fall injuries. Poor sleep combined with multiple trips to the bathroom is a risk multiplier, especially as you age. So it may actually be safer. If you sleep better you'll probably be safer in your daily routines too.

Being diapered at night isn't necessarily the easiest discussion to have in the dating process, but it's easier to get it over with up front so they know what they're dealing with. If the other person hesitates, maybe they're not for you anyway. In the universe of health considerations one would make for a long term partner they cared for, if a wet diaper is enough to make them hesitate about a relationship, they'd leave you for other health problems too.

For me they have helped considerably, I totally understand where you're coming from in being hesitant. Honestly I was as well when I first started, and wish I hadn't been. I didn't know what nocturia was before it began, but as I've mentioned many times I have OAB that's always been more prevalent at night. Before my last place of employment went bankrupt we were in a huge bind, due to the owners incompetence and lack of involvement, this meant I was working 14-16 hour days, 7 days a week for a full month. And there I was, every night, with stress, with the nightmare dreams about working on what we were working on at work, and 5-6 trips per night to the bathroom. When I was let go - an actual smart move by the CEO so I could collect my benefits - it was a relief, and all I wanted was sleep. Uninterrupted sleep. I dug out my ConvertUps, ripped open a pack of diapers, and nearly every night since May, I've worn a diaper to bed and my quality of sleep has significantly improved. I look better, I'm more energized, I'm not fighting brain fog in the morning. I'm not going back. For me, best decision.

The reality of being 'Nocturia' is that the early stages does not fit nicely into the definition of IC as the individuals tends to hold urine and commonly can make it to the toilet. The reality of simply wearing diapers and with a controlled release, wetting them will not set the foundation in place for one to become ever more reliant on diapers and as a result become full-on Incontinent. It just does not work that way.

Sleep is a very important need and the failure to obtain enough sleep can be dangerous. Sleep specialist will recommend whatever tool that allows you to sleep deeply! The important term is sleep deeply, as most individuals who are 'Nocturia' do not sleep deeply because they are deeply concerned that they may wet the bed. What the tool does, in this case a diaper, is to allow you to sleep deeper as the worry of wetting the bed is no longer in play.

What allows you to nightly receive deep sleep is appropriate!

After wearing night time diapers due to aging and diabetes (nerve damage causing IC), I've enjoyed great sleep. On top of that, my meds make it necessary to get up out of bed slowly to avoid falling. So I feel very good about staying in bed. It didn't take me too long to embrace that.

In your situation, as Edgewater has said, I don't think there is a risk of developing IC from wearing overnight. That extra sleep is so golden! The only negative is that it will mean not skipping any showers in the morning. But it is well worth it.

As far as cost goes, I keep that minimal by using TENA (NA) Super, which is cloth-backed. They work great, comfortable for overnight and easy to put on. You do need plastic pants for them because they do weep slightly if soaked. The TENA Super are best priced at Walmart by the bag of 24 and last almost a month. I don't think you can beat that for a suitably absorbent overnight diaper.

I think its unusual to have nocturia all your life. For most of us its related to ageing or to medical issues. Maybe you should get it checked out. Like many who have nocturia relating to a medical problem like I have diapers arent always a solution by themselves. With diapers you still wake up having to pee and if your like a lot of us you will feel like you have to pee but wont always be able to. Some doctors recommend desmopressin which decreases urine production at night and some people have had success with "loop" diuretics that help clear the bladder when your awake. For me nocturia has been intermittent. But its a really irritating problem to have. I would rather not have to waken and just pee into a diaper in my sleep instead. I am now taking a drug for a sleep disorder and find I dont suffer from nocturia nearly as much.

I still try to make it to the toilet when I can during the day. Nighttime is a different story. Waking up 5-8 times a night was literally killing me. I was a walking zombie during the day and was suffering other health problems due to poor sleep. I had a sleep tracker report that I was getting less than 60 minutes of restorative sleep and about 4 hours of light sleep even though I was spending 9 hours a night in bed. That's just not healthy. To add insult to injury I was still having accidents many nights.

I gave up on getting out of bed to use the bathroom and started wearing and using thicker diapers at night. It took quite a while but I wet now many times without waking and when I do wake to an urge, I don't generally get out of bed (which allows me to fall back asleep in seconds). Now I get 3-4 hours of restorative sleep and about 8 hours of total sleep. My health is so much better... I feel alive during the day.

I'm totally unable to go to bed without a diaper on now... I'm totally good with that. You can read dozens of stories on this board about people who make it worth with their partner and incontinence... But I don't know how anyone can make it work without sleep.

Definitely talk to a doctor and get insurance to cover it. Improve your sleep and life.

Waking up to a wet diaper is definitely better than falling asleep behind the wheel.

I don't wake up often anymore, but if I do, it's usually so brief I'm not really sure it actually happened or not. Sometimes I'll get a kink in the plumbing, and that will REALLY wake you up, though. Wetting in your sleep may or may not happen easily, though.

I have a similar problem, but without the obstruction. I just wake up and have a hard time getting back to sleep and then feel like I never get to sleep before I have to get up to pee again or it's not long after I do fall asleep that I wake back up.

I think I'm financially stable enough. Part of me just feels like I'm admitting defeat and I get frustrated that I shouldn't be having this problem.

Well, I'd much rather have dry sheets than wet ones. I have tripped over some things and bumped into others even though I try to keep the path clear.

I have been suspecting as much. I'm such a light sleeper that I have to wear ear plugs to have a hope of actually falling into a deep sleep.

Well, it's not all my life, just most of my adult life after I had to start taking a diuretic. I'm not looking forward to all the other issues I may have as I age. Trying to live healthy and take care of myself has me coming back to this issue. Exercising, stretching, and eating better every day has helped, but still feeling tired and lethargic leaves this not sleeping enough thing.

I agree. I have actually been drifting off while driving if it's more than like 15 or 20 minutes to drive :(

Thank you all for taking the time to respond to me! From what I'm hearing, I may give this a shot. I'm just hoping that my worries about getting my sheets wet and the diaper holding won't be keeping me up more than my need to pee.

I sleep with a bed protector every night. Super comfortable to sleep on and easily laundered if you leak out. It’s saved my sheets a few times. I’ve gotten some from Amazon

Approximately... I didn't keep a detailed journal...
1/3 of the time after a few months
2/3 of the time after about a year
All night most nights after a couple years.

Consider an underpad for your bed or a diaper cover similar to these: https://www.protecbriefs.com/products/adult-protecbriefs
with a good diaper and either an underpad or a diaper cover, you're very unlikely to have leaks.

Sounds similar to what I’ve experienced, I was so tired I was angry, I’d wake up to pee angry and of course couldn’t go back to bed. I finally gave in to options so I’d get good sleep, after getting past the mental baby feeling I did and have had good luck, I wear a nice brief and plastic pants after I had a small leak one night. I do slightly wake up to Lee and mentally have to say okay to let go, then back to sleep. The other option I’ve done was to use a catheter, it took a few nights for it to be comfortable to sleep through, but then you don’t even wake up as it drains constantly. That’s a whole different ordeal if you choose that route. I usually tire of the diaper and do the catheter, the. Tire of that and go back to the diaper

yes. I have four pairs now. The first pair I got had a seam sealing issue and leaked but they took care of replacing it and I've had good results since.

I have got Nocturia either, and a bunch of additional bladder problems, but i do not wet the bed usually. Before getting Botox i tried diapers at night, it worked to some point of getting better sleep to the point i could not remember wetting it, what is bedwetting in the end. At that point i stopped it though. With Botox i need to get up only one or two times, what is O.K. for me at the moment and i do not wear at night at all.

I do wear when i lay down during the day, it is some kind of necessity. When i do crash during the day and i am in my bed i can not get up again that easy (pain) and this would prolong the crash (stress from POTS), so i started to use my diapers to prevent getting up and it helps a lot in reducing the recovery time.

When i do fell asleep during my crash, it happens that i wet the diaper without remembering or that some kind of sleep paralysis hits me, i do wake up to an urge but can not move at all (it is a strange feeling). Instead of laying there in pain, i use my diaper instead either.
This did not effect my ability to hold at night, i was really worried about that.

Pastelpadding: In response to your query about whether wearing diapers for nocturia helps the situation, speaking from my personal experience, diapers at night have been a game-changer for sure! I dealt with getting up at night 3-4 times for over a year and finally decided I needed to see a urologist. He did all the tests and said I have a very small bladder and oab with urge incon. Tried a couple of drugs and didn't like the side effects at all! I made the decision to start using diapers at night so I didn't have that drugged zombie feeling the next day from all the up and down all night. It has been incredible the difference it makes. I have been wearing diapers at night for 15 months. It takes a while before you sleep thru the night and wake up thoroughly soaked. I have had 2 different periods of time when I went to bed without diapers for several nights and didn't wet the bed. Just got up the 3-4 times and was miserable the next day. Don't know how long I would be able to go with diapers at night and on any given night, not wear and stay dry. At the age of 70, getting the rest is right at the top of my priority list. If I indeed become incontinent at night, I will be rested. Hope this helps. Cheers!

I wear every night as I was waking up 3/4 times a night to pee which is not good when you’re a truck driver parked out some where as you need a big bottle for your pee ,
Then one night 6 years ago I got a very rude awakening at about 12pm I awoke mid flow peeing my bed , luckily at home
Thus from that moment on I wore diapers at nigh pt and pee in my sleep any where from 3/5 times a week
Fast forward to now I’m now 24/7 wearing as well
I’m 48
