I think Svengoolie's planning on retiring...

To those of y'all who know about or know & watch Svengoolie...last night, the show was aired an hour earlier and Batman pulled to make room for two hour-long Sven-themed shows: Svengoolie Uncrypted and the return of Sventoonie.

In the former, Sven was wandering, touring about Berwyn, on a personal scavenger hunt, outlining his & the show's history...and it took a yellow-flag turn...

Svengoolie started as a 1970 Chicago show of a different nature, featuring a hippie-esque host named Svengoolie who, like Elvira, hosted a show featuring horror flicks. It only ran until 1973, despite its cult status, then was gone. In 1979, Rich Koz, the current Sven, decided to put on Son of Svengoolie in Chicago, sought out the first Sven's blessing...and not only got it but eventually earned the right to use the name without the "Son of". And so...on with the show!

Koz' Svengoolie ran until 1986 when it was cancelled...and went out on a good note. It was picked up again in 1993/94 when the station's new management resurrected the show after becoming MeTV. In 2011, Sven went national.

In November, 2012, Koz suffered a heart attack at home but bounced back...and resumed the show, to the relief of his fans.

Now...last night on Sventoonie Uncrypted, Sven was hinting with guests that he was looking for a "Spawn of Svengoolie" but it didn't really sound serious; the specter took the deeper, harder contours of reality when a Svengoolie app commercial even said they were auditioning for "Spawn of Svengoolie". So this sounds quite plausible now.

In retrospect, it's understandable: Rich is 70 and has been Sven for 43 years. That's a long time. But there's still the fan folly of invincibility, wanting things to remain forever. That's the part which dreads, panics, tries to keep it what it is, as it is. Ya just get used to the status-quo of it.

And the uncertainty of the future...that kills. Will it be as good? It'll never be the same, of course, but you fret about whether you could get into this or not. Only time will tell, I guess.

So much change is going on right now...the pressure's on. That's the biggest torture of all. But here we go, whether we go willingly...or get dragged through it kicking & screaming. 😟

Only found out about it recently because of Toonie. Sounds rough for the fans.

Nothing stays the same, but old guys need to retire and new guys need their chance. The Spawn of Svengoolie will be someone different. And that's okay.

Someone different will bring new, different ideas, but just as fun.
