How did you discover that adults wore nappies?

Just wondering what everyone remembers about how they found out that adult nappies/diapers existed and some people needed to wear them? Was it in the media, e.g. advertising or someone just mentioning them, through seeing products on shelves, or from having a family member etc. who wore them?

Personally I think it was a gradual thing, there was a girl at my primary school who wore nappies so I knew quite early on that not everyone was able to potty train at the “normal” time, so thought there probably were people who wore them into adulthood. Then I remember a teacher telling us about how the human body worked explaining incontinence, and that people who had it wore special underwear, which I assumed was essentially big nappies. Eventually in early teens I saw Boots Staydry products on the shelves.
I remember seeing ADs for Attends adult briefs in magazines and finally seeing them on the shelf at the Pharmacy. I finally got up the nerve to buy a pack.

Like others here, I first became aware that adults wore diapers when I saw Depend and Attends ads on TV. That was in the early 80s. I was probably 8-10 years old. Not long after seeing those ads, I was staying with my great aunt and found some of the belted Attends under a sink while I was looking for a towel. I very much wanted to feel little, not old, when I wore diapers, so although the idea of adults wearing diapers was amusing to me, I didn't find adult diapers at all appealing.

I came to realization when I was put into them for the first time. I had always had a fascination with diapers at a very early age. I can remember wanting to wear them every time I saw them in the grocery store, advertisement, and at daycare. I found out at the age of 13 when I had a car accident in 1988. This left me paralyzed from the waist down and it took me a while to retrain my bladder and bowels. While in the hospital, I had a catheter in. About a week before I was released to head over to rehab, I was intermittent cathing myself but still had leakage problems. The hospital used bed pads to soak of the wetness. The first rehab I ended up in was for children and the nurses would make diapers for me out of regular Pampers and bed pads. This lasted about a week before moving to a new rehab center. When I was admitted, they took me to my room and got me settled in. The nurse checked my vital signs and then asked if I needed to be changed. I told her I wasn't sure. So she checked and said she would be right back. She came back a few minutes later with a hand full of supplies and a stack of what looked like diapers only bigger. Sure enough they were Attends diapers that are big enough to fit me. I could not believe it. After she had me all cleaned up and changed, she put the remaining supplies in the closet and left the room. My mind was blown, I was actually wearing diapers that would fit me. I've been in and out of them ever since that time.

I found out about DL's and Ab's through AOL in chat rooms. I thought I was the only one that had this interest in diapers. Boy was I wrong. I can remember typing in diapers for the first time in the search and again my mind was blown just how big the community was even back then on dialup.
Funny, had the same thing happen to me. Had no idea that adult diapers existed. I ended up in the hospital after a car accident in 1983. The accident left me U-IC and at fist it was managed with a catheter for the fist couple of months. About a week before I was to head to a rehab facility, the nurse need to take out my folly catheter and started talking about bladder management through intermittent catheterization. This didn’t go well and I was wet all the time. The nurse brought up the idea of wearing “briefs”. I wasn’t sure what briefs were so she told me that they were adult diapers. I had no idea that they made diapers that big. We talked for a minute or two and she left the room for a couple of minutes and returned with a package of diapers and changing supplies. I couldn’t believe my eyes. The diaper was all white plastic backed and super thick. It reminded me of the old fan fold Pampers from back then only a lot bigger. She had one other nurse come in to assist her as she cleaned me up and gave me a sponge bath. The two ladies set to work on diapering me in those early style single tape diapers.
My mind was going a million miles and hour as the ladies taped me in. After it was on, they pulled back the clean sheets and I no longer had to worry about a wet bed pad under me. The nurse would come in every four hours to cath and change me.
This went on for about a week or so before moving over to a rehab center. I had broke my neck and back in the accident so I spent 9 months in that facility before going home. My back was a complete injury but my c5 was just bruised and started to heal over time. In rehab, they used better diapers. I believe they were Attends at the time.
I had always had an interest in diapers as far back as I can remember and was shocked that they had them to fit me. Glad they did, not sure what I would have done. My dreams of being able to wear diapers had come true. Not really the way I wanted to obtain them but what’s done is done.
They sent me home after months in the hospital and rehab with a case of medium Attends and other supplies to get my home life started. After that, my mom just placed an order each month.
I’ve been in and out of diapers for 40 years now.
I still like them as much as I ever did, in fact I would say that my interest in them continues to grow over time.

I don’t remember adult diapers per se but I do remember “baby pants” sized for older children In the drug store. Their packaging was the same as for babies; only the size marking was different. The boy for whom they were purchased knew his status-a big baby.

just assumed if i was in to it i would'nt be the only one and i was right

I was fascinated by the plastic pants adverts in the small ads page in the early 80’s. I didn’t realise big nappies were a thing but I wanted those PPs for years. When I finally had a chance to order some (without detection) I was very disappointed with the quality.
I buy all my supplies from a genuine medical IC website now. Great value and good choice.

I am not a DL, but i learned that as a kid as well. In Germany we did not have any malls when i was a kid, but we had the "house-wife-bible", a huge "mail-oder-catalog", thick as a big bible and i liked to look at it for hours. One page was with some diapers on it, obviously not for kids and i asked my mother about it. Here is a picture of it from 1988:

The text translates like: For incontinence of bladder and bowel, Certina-One-Way-Diaper-Slip, very discrete like underwear, 8 hours, odor protection

On a Channel 4 tv series in the UK, back in the 1990s. The show featured ‘big babies.’ I had no interest in being a baby, but had wanted to wear diapers ever since I had found out as a youngster that astronauts sometimes had to wear them.
It was a huge relief to know I wasn’t the only one who felt this way, and that it was perfectly possible to do so, as I really hadn’t realised that adult nappies were a thing.

I was possibly unsurprisingly a bit of a shut-in so the first time I properly I clicked was at about 13 when mum took me to a store that sold plastic pants and nappies in adult sizes (they used to have those in Australia back in my day). I was properly fitted for those for fitted and pre-fold cloth nappies and finally some plastic pants that fit my legs perfectly by a continence specialist. An hour of my life I'll never forget.

I don't remember finding out about adult-size diapers. By the time I discovered there were other adults who liked to wear and go potty in them, I had bought and used several types. One day, though, I was actually sitting in a poopy one when I thought to look up "adult diapers," using my new high-speed cable internet. Lo and behold there was all kinds of stuff about recreational diaper use!

Same here. I think I was 9 or 10 when I discovered it!

At a school assembly when I was 8 and I learned astronauts wore them and kids were like "ugh, ew" when the man held up a over sized diaper. I then thought only astronauts wore them. Then I was 10 and I saw Depends in the aisle next to the menstrual products. My mom saw me staring at them and told me it was for people with bladder problems. Then I have been curious about it ever since but never thought about wearing them until I was 12 despite wishing I could go back to being a toddler again and wear.

The Phil Donahue show. Mom just happened to have the TV on. I saw what were Depends diapers at the grocery store, but since I couldn't read, I had no clue what they were.

I looked in the mirror!!!!

Libero junior was the first time i got aware of bigger diapers.
As a student I walked each day to school and passed a small orthopedic center . One day ( and of course all the consequently days) I noticed adult diapers in the shopping window, hardly dared to look at them, a few years later I saw them in a supermarket.
When I started working I had an internet connection, discoverd forums on yahoo, the rest is history ....
lol, was trying to think ok the name of those nappies for ages cause i used to see them in a friends house. When did they stop making them? supermarkets don’t have nappies that size anymore, until tesco started supplying the junior after being positioned to

I have the vaguest memory of seeing something on tv when I was very small, maybe someone here will know what I'm on about, it surely must have been a sketch or something. But I remember there being some little stage with young women, models, dancing, wearing (baby?) nappies and holding packs of them. It sounds like some like fetish fever dream or something but I really do remember it and it obviously had a life changing impact on me. Surely I'm not the only one to remember this?

I think the first time I learned about adults using them seriously was probably in those old mail order catalogues and newspaper adverts when I was a little older, I found it weirdly fascinating in a way I couldn't understand.

There were a few outlets where I realized there were diapers and plastic pants for adults. There were my grandmas medical catalogs from back in the day. There were all sorts of incontinent items through out. As many have said here at ADISC, I too liked seeing all the plastic pants and waterproof garments in the catalog. Also came across the well known 1990 Phil Donahue episode that interviewed adult babies when I was a teen. I had my first visual of actual adults in baby gear from that episode.. I remember my grandma being quite turned off by seeing them on TV. I wasnt really turned on by it either because it seemed so extreme at the time. I myself only really liked diapers not all the gear ,clothes and furniture.

Growing up, I had some relatives that took care of handicapped adults (that were mentally babies), and they wore diapers.
