I thought it might be useful to give some hints and tips for wearing a pubic pressure urinal.
  • The most important tip is to be properly measured and fitted by a trained nurse to ensure that the appliance will work as intended.
  • It is best to gradually increase the time wearing the appliance to build up tolerance on what will feel fairly alien (like wearing new shoes)
  • Keep the straps tight to ensure you do not “pop out” or leak and it prevents the rubber cone acting as bellows and pumping air into the urine drainage bag.
  • It is often easier to assemble everything and then step into the appliance, adjusting the groin and waist straps. Keep the waist strap high to pull the cone into the groin.
  • Washing and drying the urinal and bag each night can be done by using liquid soap and running water through the urinal into the leg bag. Hang up to dry and use the spare next day.
  • The foam flange between the skin and the opening needs to be changed every other day.
  • A small disposable swab is useful between the bottom of the appliance and the scrotum for comfort and to prevent rubbing and chafing.
  • A leg bag on the calf makes emptying very easy by raising the bottom of the trouser leg and holding over the toilet without the need to get undressed.
  • A support sleeve for the urine leg bag may be more comfortable than the straps supplied.
  • The tube to the leg bag needs proper support with a strap on the thigh.
  • Do not let the urine bag get too full, empty regularly. Replace the bags weekly.
  • Do not use any petroleum based skin care products (Vaseline etc.) as they may effect the latex rubber of the urinal. Use Cavilon or similar.
  • The urinal works when standing or walking, not really suitable for sitting or lying down.
  • Boxer shorts are more comfortable to wear than tight briefs which may stop the flow of urine into the leg bag.
  • Do not use this style of appliance if allergic to latex rubber.
