Can not set avatar?

hi this is one for the tech wizz kids on here. I know you are out there somewhere. my problem is I can not upload a photo for my avatar. when I choose the file I want it thinks about it, and then says 'file is too big for the server'. but its only one simple photograph! so how do I get round it?
