Default Songs Which Mention Your Location

Below are two which mention Alberta, for me and the other Albertan member. I can think of songs which mention Georgia, Illinois (& Chicago,) San Jose, Ontario, London, New York... I bet nearly everyone can find a (good) song mentioning their location. National anthems don't count... You may well have to resort to local bands doing punk or folk or country... That is part of the game... If you get stuck call your local campus radio station and ask a dj. They are used to odd requests..

My song#2 is obscure, but instructions to hear it are below

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_deAnCRXNo0

I'm a workin' man
But I ain't worked for a while
Like some old tin can
From the bottom of the pile
From the bottom of the pile

I have lost my way
But I hear tell
About a heaven in Alberta
Where they've got all hell for a basement

My words are like a rope
That's wrapped around my throat
Wash my mouth with soap
For words unfit to quote

I have lost my way
But I hear tell
About a heaven in Alberta
Where they've got all hell for a basement
I have lost my way
But I hear tell
About a heaven in Alberta
Where they've got all hell for a basement

And now I'm free to go
But time cannot remove
The only life I know
Now only time will prove
Yes, only time will prove

If I have lost my way
Cause I hear tell
About a heaven in Alberta
Where they've got all hell for a basement

Yeah, I have lost my way
But I hear tell
About a heaven in Alberta
Where they've got all hell for a basement

looking for the mp3...

This is how to hear this song: go to http://radio3.cbc.ca/ then put "Mike Mcdonald" in search
and in the results click on the fourth link down

CBC Radio 3 - New Music Canada - Artist - Jr. Gone Wild
... to new musical endeavours. Mike McDonald, the one constant in the band
since its beginning, has started the Mike McDonald Band. ...

Then at the right click playlist on the player, then click on third song down

Just the Other Day (Mike. McDonald)

You could hardly call it sublime, but it was a pretty good time
She was resplendent in her fashion, although she lacked that certain passion
And I was such a keener for the lifestyle that had weaned her
It was such a different scene, and we tried to grow up mean

And I met her in Alberta but I never uttered a word of
The feelings that I had even when I felt real bad
Cuz things were so contrary teenage years are scary
Experience was nil and I see her still

In the bars and the libraries and the wars and bowls of cherries
And the poetry of ages and the rosemaries and the sages
And the wheat and wind and dirges, through the prairies and the urges
And the clumsiness of youth and the wisdom of the truth

And I was thinking just the other day
Was it fun, was it dumb, was it right?
Guess I'll get a case of beer looks like I'm gonna be up all night

It was neat and almost forgotten quite like Johnny Rotten
All the punkers drank their fill and they puked on the windowsill
Of a blurry unwritten future while splitting all the sutures
Of a past tattooed with pain impossible to explain

And it took about forty full moons and a hundred thousand sad tunes
And a million barricades and a bad version of purple haze
To lift the rusty visor of the jaded knight inside her
So she could see the starting gun and then her life went on the run

Chorus

I tried to stay behind her but the slipstream was a sidewinder
And I tripped on an ideal and my heart burned and peeled
So I collected my resources and I ate about seven courses
Of a dozen bad mistakes served on silver plates

And she lived happily ever after and I got lost in the laughter
Emitted by the stream of an adolescent dream
And I wound up in the alley where the broken hearts would rally
Against a world of hurt although we ate it for desert

And so I lost her in Alberta and since then I never heard of
Her vision or her light or her blindness or her night
Me I'm parallel with danger now that she's become a stranger
I gotta laugh when it hits the surface... thank God the past can't find a purchase....

Chorus

I knew this song would come to my head first. I never heard the song and I don't want to hear it.

Bloody Chavs.I also can't be bothered to find a video either. So sue me.

(Mickal is in a bad mood.)

Lily Allen L.D.N Lyrics

(Verse 1)
Riding through the city on my bike all day,
'Coz the filth took away my license.
It doesn't get me down and I feel OK,
'Coz the sights that I'm seeing are priceless!
Everything seems to look as it should,
But, I wonder what goes on behind doors.
A fella looking dapper - and he's sitting with a slapper,
Then I see it's a pimp and his crack whore!

You might laugh - you might frown,
Walking round London town
(Chorus)
Sun is in the sky, oh why, oh why
Would I wanna be anywhere else?
Sun is in the sky, oh why, oh why
Would I wanna be anywhere else?
When you look with your eyes,
Everything seems nice...
But, if you look twice,
You can see it's all lies!

(Verse 2)
There was a little old lady,
Who was walkin down the road,
She was struggling with bags from Tesco.
There were people from the city havin' lunch in the park,
I believe that is called 'al fresco'.
When a kid came along to offer a hand,
But before she had time to accept it,
Hits her over the head - doesn't care if she's dead,
'Cause he's got all her jewellery and wallet!

You might laugh - you might frown,
Walkin round London town.

(Chorus)
Sun is in the sky, oh why, oh why
Would I wanna be anywhere else?
Sun is in the sky oh why, oh why
Would I wanna be anywhere else?
When you look with your eyes,
Everything seems nice...
But, if you look twice,
You can see it's all lies!

Life, yeah that city life, yeah that city life, yeah that city life...
Life, yeah thats city life, yeah thats city life, yeah thats city life.

(Chorus)
Sun is in the sky, oh why, oh why
Would I wanna be anywhere else?
Sun is in the sky, oh why, oh why
Would I wanna be anywhere else?
Sun is in the sky, oh why, oh why
Would I wanna be anywhere else?
Sun is in the sky, oh why, oh why
Would I wanna be anywhere else?
When you look with your eyes,
Everything seems nice...
But, if you look twice,
You can see it's all lies!
When you look with your eyes,
Everything seems nice...
But, if you look twice,
You can see it's all lies!

Hmmm...my city doesn't get mentioned often, but here's a song about it. It actually got alot of airtime when it came out, and still gets played every once in a while here. It's funny if you live here :P

One Great City by the Weaktherthans
http://youtube.com/watch?v=F1WxZ4w7NFM

Late afternoon, another day is nearly done
A darker grey is breaking through a lighter one
A thousand sharpened elbows in the underground
That hollow hurried sound, feet on polished floor
And in the dollar store, the clerk is closing up
And counting loonies trying not to say

I hate Winnipeg

The driver checks the mirror seven minutes late
The crowded riders' restlessness enunciates
The Guess Who sucked, the Jets were lousy anyway
The same route everyday
And in the turning lane
Someone’s stalled again
He’s talking to himself
And hears the price of gas repeat his phrase

I hate Winnipeg

And up above us all
Leaning into sky
Our golden business boy
Will watch the North End die
And sing, “I love this town”
Then let his arcing wrecking ball proclaim

I
Hate
Winnipeg

From coast to coast by night and day, hear the clickin' of the wheels
The hummin' of the diesel, of her ribbons of steel
Carryin' the memories of a nation built by hand
See the Indian Pacific span the land

She's the pride of all the railway men 'cross country where she flies
From blue Pacific waters to where the mountains rise
By lakes and wide brown rivers, through desert country dry
See the Indian Pacific passin' by

Oh the Indian Pacific she goes rollin' down the track
Five thousand miles to travel before she's there and back
Beside the line, a drover waves his battered old grey hat
And kids are catchin' yabbies down by the river flat
And a woman hangs her washing in a backyard near the line
As the Indian Pacific's rollin' by

Hear the whistle blowin' lonely 'neath the Nullabor star light
Saluting those who walk across the track she romps tonight
Callin' to the railway camp and the fitters on the line
I'm the Indian Pacific, right on time

From the silver of the Broken Hill to old Kalgoorlie gold
She mirrors all the colours of the land so hot and old
Then the western clouds are blooming and the air is just like wine
And the Indian Pacific's makin' time

Oh the Indian Pacific she goes rollin' down the track
Five thousand miles to travel before she's there and back
From the waters of the western sea to the eastern ocean sand
The Indian Pacific spans the land
Oh the Indian Pacific spans the land

Well...this is an obvious one...anyone who's ever been to the East Coast will have heard it before

Farewell to Nova Scotia (performed by Ryan's Fancy)

The sun was setting in the west
The birds were singing on every tree
All nature seemed inclined for a rest

But still there was no rest for me.

Chorus
Farewell to Nova Scotia, the sea-bound coast
Let your mountains dark and dreary* be
For when I am far away on the briny ocean tossed
Will you ever heave a sigh and a wish for me?

I greive to leave my native land
I grieve to leave my comrades all
And my parents whom I held so dear
And the bonnie, bonnie lassie that I do adore.

Chorus

The drums they do beat and the wars do alarm
The captain orders, I must obey
So farewell, farewell to Nova Scotia's charms
For it's early in the morning and I am far, far away.

Chorus

I have three brothers and they are at rest
Their arms are folded on their breasts
But a poor simple sailor just like me
Must be tossed and driven on the dark blue sea.

Chorus

'dreary' is typicly sung 'drear-eye'.
'every' is another term spoken differently, as it inclines to be sung "ev'rey".
'lass' is sometimes sung "lassie" or (If the singer is female) "lad" or "laddie".

Another which is well known in 'country' circles and, of course, with the older generations of Nova Scotians (I'm not that old, but I know it!)

My Nova Scotia Home by Hank Snow (just the first half of the video)

There's a place I'll always cherish, neath the blue Atlantic skies
Where the shores down in Cape Breton, bit the golden sun to rise
And the fragrance of the apple blossoms, above the dew kissed lawns
Back in dear old Nova Scotia, the place where I was born

The Scotian and the Ocean Limited, and the Maritime express
Their mighty engines throbbing, make their way towards the west
And the sturdy fishing schooner, sways so lazy to and frow
Nova Scotia is my sanctuary, and I love her so

Far across this great Dominion,I have travelled far and wide
Where the shores out in Vancouver, kiss the blue Pacific tide
I have crossed the snow capped Rockies
saw the wheat fields golden blaze
Headed back to Nova Scotia, where I'll spend my twilight days

Where the pretty robin red breast
Sings to loved ones in the trees
and the French dialect in old Quebec, keeps a'calling out to me
It seems to say be on your way be on your way
There's a welcome at the door
Where the kin folks are awaiting
on that green Atlantic shore

Down through beautiful New Brunswick, and across to PEI
To the rock bound coasts of Newfoundland
I'll love them till I die
But if God came here on Earth with us
and asked for a little rest
I'd take him to Nova Scotia home
The place that I love best

And for the Capers...of course...there's always...

Rita MacNeil and She's Called Nova Scotia

She grows on you slowly
The first time you meet
There's just so much beauty
The heart can believe
And you want to stay longer
And she's ever so pleased
You're one of the many who don't
Want to leave

Chorus
So walk through her green field
Go down to the sea
The fortune in your eyes
Is more like a dream
She's called Nova Scotia
And she so makes you feel
You've discovered a treasure
No other has seen

It's hard to remember
The places you've been
For once in her presence
She's all that you see
And she cradles you softly
Like a warm gentle breeze
And wins your heart over
With a feeling of peace

Chorus

She welcomes the strangers
From far away shores
While deep down inside her
Some walk through her soul
And at night in her slumber
The winds softly call
And awakens her spirit
That lives in us all

Chorus

There are dozens more songs about Nova Scotia, but I'll stop now :-D

EDIT: 'Coon I can't believe you didn't include Gordon Lightfoot's "Alberta Bound"

Oh these are priceless - all of them! *sings Farewell to Nova Scotia to himself for the next week, followed by "Speed Bonny Boat"* While Canada is dominating this thread, here are two more from me... (BTW, any other Canadians need only pore over the songbook of Stompin' Tom Connors, or, failing that, Gordon Lightfoot for material ) Alberta Bound would have been my 4th choice; my third would be Four Strong Winds, Alberta's unofficial anthem:
There are so many great versions to choose: Neil Young, Searchers, Bob Denver, but I chose Johnny Cash, he sounds so old and sad

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fvgDXkHjAHM

Think I'll go out to Alberta,
Weather's good there in the fall.
I got some friends that I can go to working for,
Still I wish you'd change your mind
If I asked you one more time,
But we've been through that a hundred times or more.

Four strong winds that blow lonely,
Seven seas that run high,
All those things that don't change, Come what may.
If the good times are all gone,
And I'm bound for moving on.
I'll look for you if I'm ever back this way.

If I get there before the snow flies,
And if things are going good,
You could meet me if I send you down the fare.
But by then it would be winter
Not much for you to do
And the wind sure can blows cold way out there

Four strong winds that blow lonely,
Seven seas that run high,
All those things that don't change, Come what may.
If the good times are all gone,
And I'm bound for moving on.
I'll look for you if I'm ever back this way.

And I can't resist this one for (North) Ontario
