So this is kinda a thread game I think.. It may belong in Off-topic, but I am unsure so I am putting it here.
The point of this "game" is to say something that happened today in history. It can be any date, from any country, as long as it's an event in history, it can be posted. Here's a few examples to get this thing going: Feb 21 1173 Pope Alexander III canonizes Thomas Becket Archbishop of Canterbury 1431 England begins trial against Joan of Arc 1764 John Wilkes thrown out of English House of Commons for "Essay on Women" 1782 US congress resolves the establishment of a US mint 1853 US authorizes minting of $3 gold pieces 1857 US issues flying eagle cents 1866 Lucy B Hobbs (Taylor) becomes 1st US woman to earn a DDS degree 1878 1st telephone directory (with 50 names) issued (New Haven CT) 1885 Washington Monument dedicated (Washington DC) Let's keep it going! |

March 20
1602 The Dutch East India Company was established. During its 196-year history, it became one of the world's most powerful companies. 1727 English physicist/astronomer Sir Isaac Newton died in London at age 84. 1969 John Lennon married Yoko Ono in Gibraltar. 1985 Libby Riddles became the first woman to win the Iditarod. 1990 Namibia becomes an independent nation. 1995 Two members of the Japanese cult Aum Sinrikyo released poisonous gas in a Tokyo subway stop during rush hour, killing 12 people and sending over 5,000 to the hospital for treatment. 1999 Bertrand Piccard and Brian Jones became the first to fly a hot-air balloon nonstop around the world. 2003 Ground troops entered Iraq and a second round of air strikes against Baghdad was launched. I thought there was something nasty about today *runs and hides from tomorrow* |

History was not my strongpoint in school. Well, most subjects weren't, but that's another story!
Seeing all these dates and events posted gives me flashbacks to the scary days of confronting history mid-term and final exams in HS.![]() I'll just be an observer on this thread and maybe learn a thing or two about history I missed the first time around. ![]() ~Pramrider |
