I tend to use a damp sponge and just go all over, spot cleaning almost. I've seen places recommend putting them in a pillow case and chucking it in the washing machine on a gentle cycle - which should work, but getting it dry could be interesting. Some recommend rolling your plushie in a towel and squashing it as much as you can to force the water out before leaving it out to dry. Eeek! Even if my ted did survive the whole washing process, neither him nor I would survive the squashing 'treatment'. All depends on how old your plushie - newer/less cuddled ones should survive being washed and dried fairly well.
Dry cleaning should be alright though - although I'd be too much of a wimp to take mine to a dry-cleaners!
