Okay, I FINALLY got around to this chapter, but it isn't particularly long or awesome. I'll be trying to make it up.

Chapter Eight

Marcus woke up on the small mattress he had woken up on last night. He looked over to where the woman had been when he saw her last night. Nothing was there. He got up gently, trying not to injure his side. He stumbled over to the only door, opened it, and walked through. The woman was there, sitting in a fold-out chair and looking out the window, a sniper rifle in hand. She noticed him.

“Glad to see you’re awake kid. You feel okay?” she asked.

“Yeah, much better than I did last night,” Marcus responded.

“Good. I hope you don’t mind I used some sewing thread I had laying around to patch you up.”

“It’s no big problem, as long as I’m not bleeding to death.”

“Alright. I’m Maria by the way.”

“I’m Marcus,” Marcus said leaning against the wall. The pain in his side had re-appeared, and it showed on his face. Maria got up from her seat.

“Here, sit down,” She said, helping him to her now empty seat. Marcus obliged, and the pain vanished.

“If just standing up is hurting you, we’re going to have to find another way to make you pull you’re weight. I can’t afford to babysit,” Maria stated, “the only way I can think of doing that is if you learn how to use this.” Maria passed her sniper to Marcus. He began examining it. It was completely black, and seemed in great condition.

“I’ll teach you how to be a master with that thing,” Maria stated with a smirk. Within the next two days, Marcus learned how to handle a sniper, and a bit more about Maria. She had been a Black Ops sniper for several years, and was discharged after being shot several times at close range with a pistol. She barely survived, and she ended up becoming a shooting instructor. Apparently, she had been one of the top five snipers in the entire United States Military, which explains how she was able to shoot of a zombie’s jaw in the dark of night.

“Yeah!” Marcus shouted. A small group of about five zombies had been stumbling by, and Marcus succeeded in getting head shots for all of them taking about a second for each one. He felt like a master, and he was impressed Maria was able to teach him so much in only a few days.

“Great job. Now that you know what you’re doing, I think it’s time for a bit of a test,” Maria said. Marcus looked at her, wondering what “test” she had in mind. He continued practicing his skills until it was night. He wondered what would have happened if Maria hadn’t taken all the ammunition from the shooting range, giving her plenty of shots to waste for his practice. Marcus fell asleep, shortly after getting on the mattress. The next morning, Maria woke him up early.

“Okay, today, we’re going to see just how skilled you are,” Maria stated, “I’m going to go into the mini-mart across the street for supplies. The aisle I’ll be in is clearly visible from the front window of the first floor. I want you to cover me, because I saw a small party of people go in a few days ago, and they ended up running out at full speed missing a few guys.” Marcus gulped. He hoped he would be able to.

“Don’t worry though. I’ll bring a rifle to help myself, so I won’t be relying completely on you, “she continued. Marcus nodded. He was ready. He stayed by the front window, and looked into the mini-mart through his scope, noticing that the large front windows that the most stores seem to have, were broke. There were a few zombies shuffling around. Maria placed a walkie-talkie on the table next to the window.

“I’ll use this to talk to you. Don’t respond to anything I say, just do it,” she stated, “First of, take down all the things you see. We’ll call them tangos for now.” Marcus nodded. He got one of them in his sites, and quickly took it down. Then again, and again until he couldn’t see any more.

“Good. I’m moving in.” Maria said. She opened the front door, closed it behind her, and walked over in to the mini-mart. She had a small bag on her, which Marcus knew would hold the supplies. She made it to the aisle, and began putting cans of food in the bag. Marcus noticed one of them sneaking up behind her. He quickly took it down, causing Maria to turn around and notice how close it had been to her. She resumed filling up the bag. Marcus noticed another one coming out from the back room, then another, then another. An entire horde was coming for her. Marcus tried shooting them down. For every one he got, three more took its place. Marcus grabbed the walkie-talkie, and knew he had to disobey her orders.

“Maria, a horde! There’s too many for me to take down, you need to get out of there!” Marcus whispered. He continued firing as Maria threw one last can into the bag. Marcus eyes bulged. The horde knew she was there, and it was flanking her from both sides. Marcus continued firing on the ones on the side closest to him as fast as he could, reloading when needed. He was trying to clear a path for her to get out, which she must have realized, as she began firing on the same group he was. She was able to run past the ones left, and made it to the house, locking the door behind her.

“Good job kid. Unfortunately, there wasn’t much there. That group of people I saw must have taken most of it. We need to get out of here. There aren’t any supplies left there, and the things will get through the door eventually. We can take my hummer; it’s in the back alleyway.” Maria said quickly, grabbing her keys and going upstairs. She emerged again carrying to large sacs of ammunition. She handed one to Marcus, and they both quickly went out the back door. Marcus got in the passenger seat after they both threw the sacs in the back. Maria got in the driver’s seat, and sped away from the house. Marcus sighed. That test had been more trouble than it was worth.

Maria turned on the radio, only to be greeted with static on every station. She turned it off, sighing. Marcus looked out the window again. The only thing he was ever able to do on long car rides was look out the window. Nothing else interested him. It was the same with Alec. He looked over to Maria.

“Any clue where we’re going?” He asked.

“The last message I heard on the radio was that the town of Juteston was surviving. It fortified itself in time to keep those things out,” Maria said, “I’ve been there before, so I know how to get there.” Marcus nodded, and looked back out the window. He fell asleep with his head resting on the door.

Chapter Nine

Alec grabbed a can for himself, opened it, and took a slurp of what he guessed was chicken noodle from the can. From what he saw of the inside building, it only had enough room to fit 11 people comfortably, so he knew they’d have to go to the junkyard at some point. He looked back toward the bridge, wondering if there was any way he could block it off to stop the “zeds”, as his men had been calling them for a while, from getting through. That’s when he noticed what looked like a concrete block next to it. He finished his soup before he sought out Greg, finding him almost instantly.

“Hey Greg, do you know what that concrete block next to the bridge is?” Alec asked.

“No, I didn’t even notice it. I’ll check it out later when I get the chance.” Greg responded. Alec nodded.

“Also, we need to get a team together soon. There’s no way over 30 people can fit in the building, so our only option is to go to the junkyard and salvage enough scrap to make something. We should at least obtain the scrap by tonight, because we need to get everyone as safe as possible. God forbid everyone is sleeping outside when a horde comes.” Alec stated.

“I agree, but we won’t be able to construct houses, especially out of scrap, by tonight. For now we can use the busses to block of the bridge, and check out that block.”

“Alright, good call,” Alec agreed, “then tomorrow we can begin construction, get any livestock from that farm, and sort out anything else important.” Greg nodded and walked off, almost being instantly grabbed by someone who needed some form of help. Alec began walking back toward the building, when David walked over to him.

“There’s the matter of the rooms. There’s one barracks, with exactly 10 beds in it, along with what is believed to be the room of the building’s supervisor. I think it would be best if we created a defense team of 10, and have each half with a different shift, to protect this settlement best with what we have. Miguel and I have talked and we think you should take the supervisor’s room. You are our leader, and you could probably make use of it better than anyone else.” Alec thought for a moment.

“Alright, I suppose that arrangement will work for now. Find 7 good shots to fill in the gaps of the team. Try to do it as soon as possible, since we have something to do tonight already.” Alec responded. David saluted before going off to complete his task. Alec went back into his bus, took his backpack, and made his way to the supervisor’s room. It was practically an apartment. He removed all of the supervisor’s clothes from the dresser, and began replacing them with his own. He got to the bottom of the bag, and noticed his diapers and other items. He froze for a moment, having almost forgot about them, and unpacked them into their own drawer. He was glad that the busses had toilets, and that he was able to dispose of the bambino he had been wearing when he separated from the group during a small raid on a convenience store. He could only imagine what would have happened had anyone seen it. He sat down on the bed, noticing the remote to a TV close by. He started flipping through the channels, most of them just static now. He turned the TV back off and laid back into the bed, turning his head to look at the sunshine slipping through a small window.

“Alec, are you there? It’s Greg.” The window suddenly went dark, causing Alec to get up. The door opened up, and Greg walked in.

“I got the team together. We’re ready to go when you are.” Greg said. Alec nodded, and looked back at the clock as Greg left. It was 4 hours later. He must have fallen asleep. He opened up his drawers, and suited up in the extra military gear they had brought from the base as they left. He walked back out and saw the team. He didn’t recognize anyone except Greg, David, and Miguel.

“Good news, David found a dump truck near the scrap yard.” Miguel announced.

“Great,” Alec said, “that’ll make things much easier in the long run. Miguel, stay here and watch over everyone. Radio us if anything at all happens.”

“Yes sir!” Miguel said with a salute. Alec and his men piled onto the bus, and shortly after Greg got in the driver’s seat they were there. David and a man named Roger went to retrieve the dump truck, while the rest of them searched for any immediate threats nearby, finding none. David and Roger pulled the pick up truck into the scrap yard, and they began piling any pieces they could use in. Suddenly, they heard soft music faintly playing. Alec made a hand signal to stay put, and began creeping toward the source of the sound with his rifle at the ready.

He crept closer and closer, eventually noticing what appeared to be small shack. He carefully walked up to it, and looked through a small window. Inside was a room dimly lit by one candle, with a man inside listening to a radio. The man seemed relaxed, and was sitting comfortable on a recliner. Alec knocked on the window, which he guessed was plastic. The man quickly shot up out of his seat, grabbing a pistol off a nearby table, and aimed at the window. When he saw it was a person, he lowered his aim and walked over.

“Who the hell are you?” He asked Alec, though his voice was slightly hard to hear because of the window.

“My name is Alec. I and my team came here to secure some scrap metal. Who the hell are you?”

“My name is Micky, I’ve been here since the plague started spreading.”
“That seems a bit stupid, I don’t think that your shack would hold of many zeds.” Alec replied.

“Coming from the idiot who decided to come in to a large junkyard at night and investigate alone.” Micky replied curtly. Alec realized he was right.

“Sorry. Listen, we came so we could get material to build shacks out of. You seem to know how to do just that, and I can’t tell you how much I would appreciate it if you gave us a hand.” Alec said. Micky thought for a minute. He walked over to the door, opening it.

“Get in here and we’ll talk.” Micky stated. Alec walked in, and Micky closed the door. He sat down in his recliner, and Alec took a seat on a wooden chair.

“Now, assuming I help you, what exactly do I get out of it?” Micky asked.

“We can give you better protection than that pistol, plus we have a good supply of food.” Alec stated.

“Hmm…” Micky thought, “Let me check it out myself, and I’ll tell you then. Alec nodded. He and Micky went back over to the team, who had been getting nervous at Alec’s absence. They drove back to the base, and after arriving Micky was given a tour of the area.

“Alright, I’ll do it. I’ll give you a hand in making some shacks.” Micky stated. Alec smiled, things were getting better. He got everyone gathered together and decided to keep the group informed.

“Okay everyone, this is Micky, and from now on, he’s in charge of construction. Whatever he tells you to do, do it. Construction for shacks to live in begins tomorrow, and until then you’ll either have to find open space in the building or sleep outside, your call,” He said, “we’ll be blocking the bridges with the busses, so we’ll be safe.”

“Actually Alec,” Greg said, “that block by the bridge turned out to be the control panel, and the bridge is a draw bridge. Now that the panel is fixed, we don’t need to use the busses.”

“Even better,” Alec responded, “everyone, get some rest. We have a lot of work to do tomorrow.” Everyone dispersed, getting ready for sleep. Alec went into his room, changed into his favorite sleeper, and quickly lied down into bed, exhausted from the day. Almost as soon as he pulled up the covers, he heard a blood-curdling scream from outside. Alec jumped out of his bed, grabbed his pistol, and ran toward the source.

“What the hell? The bridge is up, and we made sure none of the zeds were in the area! What could have caused this to happen?” Alec asked himself. He reached the source, and saw a woman being bitten by a soldier. Alec gasped. He’d forgotten about George.

Chapter 10

Marcus woke up to the sound of a car door slamming. He jolted up, and saw Maria walking around the side of the car. Marcus got out as well, to see where he was and to give any help she needed. He quickly noticed he was in a gas station, and took his rifle from the back seat. He went flat on to the ground, and began looking for any enemies. He saw one, but it hadn’t seemed to notice the pair yet.

“Maria,” Marcus whispered, “tango spotted. You may want to hurry up with filling up.” Maria nodded, and finished up. He suddenly heard a footstep behind him. Marcus rolled onto his back and fired, shooting a blood-soaked attendant in the neck. Marcus stumbled to his feet, and quickly used his rifle as a bat, hitting the thing’s head with a crack. It fell over, dead, and Marcus quickly turned his attention over to the other one he noticed earlier, which was now stumbling toward him. He took a quick shot, killing it instantly, and began scanning the entire area for anything else.

“Get in the car Marcus, we’re done filling up” Maria stated, getting into the driver’s side. Marcus jumped in too after placing his rifle into the back seat. The car rumbled to life, and they were off again.

“So, how close are we?” Marcus asked.

“Not far off now, we should be there within the hour.” Maria replied. She soon turned on the radio, to stop the silence.

“The FVZA is continuing its work. It’s currently blocked off major areas of population such as New York City and Chicago, and are doing all they can to eliminate all traces of the HZV. They’ve also created temporary bases around the country to help deal with local infections. If anyone you know is bitten, immediately sever the bitten area completely. If the person begins to develop flu-like symptoms, it is best to kill them.” Maria turned the radio back off. Silence was better than that. A half an hour later, Marcus noticed what looked like large, steep hills on the horizon.

“Is that it?” Marcus questioned.

“Yup, we’re here kid.” She replied. They pulled up to a massive gate made from what looked like scrap metal, which was flanked by sniper towers made similarly. Maria and Marcus got out of the car, and walked toward the gate. A small door in it opened, and a man stepped out.

“You must be Maria and Marcus. I’m Hugh Frohflov, the mayor of Juteston. It’s a pleasure to meet you.” He said. He extended his hand for them to shake, which they did.

“As per our agreement, we’ll be the night watch snipers. Can you tell us where we’ll be living?” Maria asked.

“You’ll be in the snipers’ room in the barracks, right inside the city. Once you’re settled in, I’ll give you the details of your work.” Hugh replied, before returning to the city. Maria began walking back to the car, and Marcus quickly did the same. The gate opened, creaking the entire time, and Maria drove the car into the city. Marcus looked around. It was barely a town, much rather a city. Maria parked the car behind the large barracks, where quite a few we’re already resting. As soon as Marcus got out of the car, he heard a gunshot, and he immediately took his rifle and scoped the area. No one else seemed to be worried. Maria put her hand on his shoulder.

“Don’t worry, it came from outside. This place is zombie central, there’s almost always at least a few of them outside the walls. They shoot them if they get too close.” She said. Marcus loosened up.

“So, how did the make these walls anyway, they look like hills.” Marcus asked.

“They pretty much are. The town was able to bulldoze up enough dirt to form those walls, and they got grass to grow on it.” Maria responded. Marcus was amazed. The size of the town meant that it must have taken days to make the walls. It showed the commitment of the town. Marcus was happy to be a part of it. He and Maria went into the barracks, and quickly found the room they’d be staying in. They both unpacked what little belongings they had into their respective beds, out of the eight in that room. They placed their rifles on the rack near the door, and left the room as quickly as they came.

“Ah, yes, now then. You’re jobs are simple. All you have to do is get into those towers. If anything comes within fifty feet, shoot it down. You’ll be working from dusk until dawn, and everything you’ll need is up there.” Hugh said, catching them as they left the barracks. Maria and Marcus both nodded that they understood, and Hugh went back to whatever it was he had to do.

Marcus decided to explore around, and was quickly engulfed in the sights of the town. They had lights working, probably through solar or wind energy, which made the town look even more stunning through the mosaic of different colors. Marcus was stunned at how beautiful the city was. Then he noticed how it had gotten dark. He ran back to the barracks, got his sniper and quickly found Maria.

“Good, you’re back just in time for our shift.” Maria said, moving toward one of the towers. Marcus ran over to the other, and climbed the scrap-metal ladder. He made it to the top, and sat down in a fold out chair set up. He looked out into the horizon, and gasped. Dozens of zombies were now outside the city, though none of them too close. In the distance, Marcus could see a city, which was glowing fiercely from a massive fire. Marcus looked blankly ahead. The world had gone to hell. He looked over to notice a table with a small radio, most likely for handling emergencies, and bag of chips as a snack.

Marcus couldn’t help but lean back in his chair and sigh. He never felt more hopeless. He quickly composed himself, and began to keep lookout through a pair of night-vision goggles left on the small table for him. They barely fit, but they did the job. The night was mostly quiet, except for one zombie who came too close and was promptly shot down. After what seemed like days, Marcus was finally able to see the sun. He climbed back down the ladder, and yawned as he walked toward the barracks. Maria stopped him.

“You should get something to eat, you haven’t had anything substantial in a while.” She stated. Marcus agreed and was off to find his dinner, or breakfast. He really wasn’t sure what it was. He soon stumbled upon a small building with a painted sign saying simply “Food” above the door, and he walked in. It looked just like a restaurant. A man walked up to Marcus, with a menu.

“Hello sir, will you be dining here this evening?” he asked.

“Uh… yeah, I guess so.” Marcus responded. The man led Marcus to a small table, where he sat down and was handed a menu before the man was off again. Marcus looked at it. They’d obviously made it from cardboard with a marker. To suit the current conditions, only non-perishable food items on it now. Marcus asked for some vegetable soup, before his thoughts drifted off to Alec. He hoped desperately he was still alive. If he was, Marcus would find him.

“Here you are.” The man said, placing a bowl of hot soup in front of Marcus. He slurped it up quickly, eager to finally get to bed. Marcus began walking back, along the edges of the wall, when he heard a weird sound. He turned around to notice I pile of grass and dirt next to the wall. He ran over to it, and jumped back. Something had made a small portion of the wall collapse. He listened closely to try to hear what it was. Not a sound.

“Hello?” Marcus asked, trying to draw whatever it was out. Only a whimper responded. He got on his knees, trying to draw it out again by making himself an easier target. He saw eyes glowing from the other side of the wall. They got slowly closer, and Marcus breathed a sigh of relief. A German shepherd walked out of the darkness, whimpering with its ears down. Marcus crept toward it, the dog not making any moves, and began petting it. The dog sat right next to him, and started rubbing up against him. Marcus pet it some more, before quickly finding a soldier, the dog following.

“Excuse me, part of the wall collapsed over there,” Marcus pointed in the direction of the gap, “and it’s big enough for those bastards to get in through.”

“Shit…” the soldier cursed, and then grabbed his radio, “we have a code black behind the furniture emporium.” The soldier ran in the direction of the hole, leaving Marcus with the dog. He could only walk back to the barracks and figure out what to do tomorrow. He was able to keep the dog from coming with him inside, and passed out as soon as his head touched the pillow.
