Might I suggest that for those of you dying to know what's going on with Billy, it would be okay to read The Addict that I wrote last year. Yes, it is LONG, but you've got time since I will be going at about a chapter per week on my current story. The Reporter should stand on its own, and should not require that you've read The Addict, however, I'm obviously writing it knowing people have read The Addict. Anyway, I hope you enjoy my characters.

Chapter 3:

Will’s day started promptly at 7:00 A.M. when his babysitter walked him down the hall to his daycare room. By 8:00 everyone, including the always late Crystal, had arrived, just as Will had described in his report. Today, however, Will had a plan.

“Hey, Jason. It’s me Billy,” Will took the pacifier out of his mouth and spoke in a loud whisper. “How long have you been here?” The child, Jason, was one of the very young crawlers in the class, so Will didn’t have much hope. One by one he was going to talk to each child in the classroom as an adult to see if anyone would respond. At that moment he and Jason were semi-alone behind a wall of soft blocks that Will had constructed. Diane, who was supervising this area, had her back turned for a moment chatting with Crystal in the next area.

Jason pulled himself up to a stand supported by the block wall. “Da,” he pointed. “Da ga,” he smiled and drooled.

No, Jason was a real child, Will was sure of it. He returned the pacifier to his mouth and moved on to the next kid.

“Hey, Tina. It’s Billy. How old are you, really?”

Over the course of the day he managed to interrogate 6 of the other 14 kids in the room without any luck. All 6 had no clue what he was saying. “Look, we’re in the same boat. I’m not going to give you away. If we join together, maybe we can get out of this place.” 6 blank stares, drools, giggles, 6 gibberish phrases were all Will got in return.

Will also used his time to investigate the room in detail. He was looking for any type of recording devices or closed circuit cameras. He even managed to discreetly pat down the children he was talking to, looking for electronics. He found nothing. By the end of the day he was pretty sure this was a real daycare room with at least 6 real children in it.

At 4:30 the first parents began to arrive for their children. One by one the class emptied. By 5:45 Will was alone as Jason was finally picked up by his Dad.

Crystal walked over to Will and hoisted him high into the air. “Come on Billy. I’ll take you to your room today.” She gave him a powerful hug. Will was getting used to her…exuberance. It didn’t bother him as much to be treated this way by her. Crystal was playful, energetic and genuine. Susan and Diane, on the other hand, he wasn’t crazy about. Not that they were mean or unkind in anyway. In fact, they were very motherly. Too motherly, that was the problem. Will couldn’t stand being ‘mothered’. It was humiliating.

While Crystal was carrying him to his room, Will paid close attention to each room they passed, each child and parent couple walking down the hall. He counted at least 4 other classrooms along the route to his bedroom. All of the children and their parents were heading toward the exit. As far as he could tell, Will was the only child left at the center all night.

‘They must know I’m different in some way,’ he guessed. ‘They must realize I have no parents to take me home, although Crystal seems to think my parents come later.’

The next morning started in the usual routine. Will stood in his crib waiting for his babysitter to arrive. He crossed his legs barely able to hold his pee. He held it until he heard her footsteps in the hall, then let loose in a gush. ‘I’ve got to stop drinking before I go to bed,’ he thought surprised by how difficult it was to make it until morning.

His babysitter, Ms. Booth, took him immediately from his crib, changed his soaking diaper, dressed him in pants with snaps in the crotch, and a bright blue short sleeve shirt with a smiling mouse on the front, then carried him to his classroom. Susan was busy cutting paper animal shapes, and Will went to the table where a bowl of cereal, apple juice and grapes awaited him for breakfast.

So far this day was starting like all the others. Today, however, Will tried something new. He wanted to get Susan talking, to see what she knew. So, after eating, he wandered over to where she was cutting, stood at her side, and leaned his head against her arm. He had seen other kids do this and it always got them attention.

“Well Billy, are you going to be a cuddle boy this morning,” she said all gushy and motherly. Will swallowed his pride, ‘I have to go through this,’ he forced himself to continue. He leaned into her closer. Susan hoisted him onto her lap, nestling him close while she continued to cut paper.

“This is a horsey,” she displayed the partially cut paper horse pattern. “Can you say ‘horsey’?”

Will, with pacifier in mouth, didn’t make a sound. He just looked up at her with ‘puppy dog’ eyes that he had seen so many of them do. It melted the women’s hearts every single time. She squeezed him and kissed his hair.

“This one is a kitty, and this one is a bunny,” she continued to point and name each pattern.

‘I don’t give a damn,’ Will screamed silently. ‘What do you know about me?’ he tried projecting his mind into hers.

Susan did talk, but in sing-song baby talk that adults do around small children, about inane childish things like butterflies playing with kitties on the playground. Overall Will’s attempt was a failure, but the reporter in him knew to be patient– she was at least talking. He knew from experience she would eventually slip and say something useful. He just had to keep her talking.

As the other kids began to arrive, Will started identifying the ones he would approach. He had 8 more to go, and being cautious meant he probably wouldn’t get to them all today.

He tried a new tactic. It went something like this. “Hey, it’s me, Billy. I’ve been watching you and I know you are like me. It’s okay, your secret is safe. If you help me, I know how to get out.” Surely this would coax one of them out of hiding. Will got to work.

He was proud of himself that by lunch he had talked with 4 of the remaining 8. No luck yet. Like yesterday, their babyish responses and clueless expressions were convincing. Will would press on after lunch and nap.

Thank you everyone for your words of encouragement. There is certainly more to come.

Tygon: Yes, I rather enjoyed Mack as well. I would like to go back and finish it one day. Problem is, there were a few details that needed to change and I had already published it. It will take some time, but I do want to come back to Mack.
