I would be wary of involving yourself in it. Simply because it's an ongoing investigation and your friend may have been distributing illegal material.
 
UPDATE: According to someone else who knows my friend. He supposedly got one of his computers back. I have not been able to check if this is true or not. I do know for a fact that his grandparents go there computers back.
 
Maybe you'll get lucky and get your camera back. At least, now there's hope.
