The short answer (besides telling you guys to look it up...) these sorts of conditions can make it so the person can't be sure of a literal or serious statement, from sarcasm, and other forms of joking... they quite literally, take things quite literally...

True.

...

Although I can't help adding: In this particular instance--it being April 1 and all--I would suggest that social acuity takes a back seat to logical deduction. :) April Fools "jokes" tend not to be inherently funny anyway. The funny part is falling victim to, or observing, the fooling. If that ever happens, of course!

got to love April 1 giggle

Democrats ( and some other politicians) are like dirty diapers; both should be changed often for the same reasons.

I fail to see what autism has to do with the post?

Autistic people don't take jokes well. This autistic person loves pulling April Fool pranks. Some can take a joke because it is a spectrum.

I am very well aware of all that, my post is more pointed at the fact that it is an increasing "excuse" for actions and it is unnecessary for it to be said. But this is off topic now, feel free to PM.

How is Caitainx saying, "One of my autie traits was problematic for me, yet again," if I may put my friend's words another way, making an excuse?

I have a question, why do people say stuff like "I have ADHD and do this" or "I have asperger's and this is what happened"? Not picking on you buddy ^^
Thank you for being nice enough to say you're not picking on him. Because it's part of Caitainx's script for how to write a post, just in case people don't know him. He and I are friends, here on ADISC, anyway, and once he knows you, he doesn't need as much of a script. Now, people with other diagnoses, I'm not sure. I need scripts for how to deal with certain people, too. I put this here for you, Snivy, because you didn't ask for a PM. Apparently, I'm evil, in someone's eyes, for defending my friend via post, instead of PM.

Why do people say their name of their disability and say they did this is because they want an understanding so you don't think they are stupid or dumb or or stubborn or lazy or a brat, etc. It's like how a person with diabetes may say how they are diabetic or have celic disease or food allergies when they reject food or are on a special diet so people won;t think they are being rude (I heard it's rude to reject food what people serve you when you are a guest) or assume they are on some diet to lose weight when they are in fact healthy weight.

Irony, sarcasm, and innuendo are profoundly difficult for me. I process everything "literally", which induces cognitive distress internally in me.

It's harder to tell online though for everyone.

You had me there for a second before I clicked on the thread.

Maybe I'm just a stick in the mud, but I just absolutely HATE April Fools Day. Easily my least favorite holiday. Yeah, it was fun at first, but I'm sick of all these unfunny jokes where people say stuff like "Your hobby is dangerous to your health", "This outrageous bill was just passed in some state", "Your fetish is proposed to be outlawed", APRIL FOOLS!!! *groan*

I just heard on TV he doesn't like our lifestyle and fetish so he is going to try and make it illegal. You will now need a prescription for diapers and anyone acting on these desires will be arrested and have to register as a sex offender because it will be seen as pedophilia and AB/DL porn will be illegal online and writing about it. Let's hope this bill won't pass.

April Fools.

Read this post on the fourth of April, my heart skipped a beat or two.

It's a little bit like the difficulties most of us have when deciding if someone is being snarky in writing... or meaning something other that what was written... as opposed to say... when someone is right in front of us, saying the same thing... there's many additional cues/clues like body language and facial expressions to help us gauge the intent or meaning... Unfortunately for Auties, and Aspies... those cues/clues aren't necessarily interpreted appropriately (or as intended) even in person...

Just imagine when we take things the wrong way... Now imagine... not really knowing what the right way, out of several possibilities is on a frequent basis...

Is it gas... or is the baby smiling at you?

Do some reading... learning is accepting... understanding is helping...

Actually I can cite a real life situation that did happen over 20 years ago to myself. I myself have Asperger's and here is how it happened when it comes to being literal. I was sick along with my sisters when I had to use the Vicks VapoRub on my chest. Having vicks under my shirt irritates me due to sensory issues that never got diagnosed until literally last year. Well I told my sister the vicks was on my chest because well that was the answer to her question from my perspective. I did not lie and thought that she was trying to harass me because everyone knew how I hated that crap on my chest. (even now I will not use it except on my neck because it irritates me that much to have vicks on anywhere that is going to be covered with clothing) My sister just kept saying "no where is the Vicks at?" and I kept responding with "On my chest" over and over again until my sister finally figured out what was wrong and asked me "Where can I find the jar of Vicks Vaporub at?" I finally responded by saying "Oh it's in the medicine cabinet over the sink in the bathroom". I was literally telling the truth just nothing that was particularly useful because I was not asked the correct specific question. This is what Asperger's as well as autism does to someone.

sigh, wasn't it just last year that you said CPS was trying to take your kids because you wore diapers? or was that two years ago? I need to learn not even to pay attention to you on 4/1. :)

Last year. But it sort of backfired because people missed the point of it and not everyone found it funny.

At first I thought 'wait April Fools day was 5 days ago, it would have been funny had it been posted back then'...then I looked at the date on the post and realised it was posted on April Fools day, so umm, funny I guess xD

I so got butterfly stomach, it's not even April Fools anymore and it still got me, i was about to cry! :(
