    Default Potty Training Trouble

    Hey all!

My sister has a daughter who just turned four and is still in diapers. She knows I post on here and wanted me to ask you all: are there any tips and tricks to getting a girl at this age interested in potty training?

Her daughter knows when her diaper needs to be changed and will go and get a clean one and bring it to my sister when it is time. My sister has tried to put her on the potty frequently, has tried the reward method, letting her daughter have some "naked time," etc.

Should we talk to a specialist?

The appropriate course of action would depend on whether or not she is trying to use the potty but just can't make it, or if she just lacks interest in doing so. If it's the first situation, a doctor's visit may be in order.

Has the kid even gone to (used) the potty at all, do they know how the process works? This is a important factor.

According to my sister, her daughter has never gone to the potty. When given the "naked time," she will not use the potty until her diaper is on again. My sister also says she has been trying to teach her daughter how to use the potty with no luck.

I might suggest that she might want to see a doctor.

the fact that she will go once the diaper is on suggests she is being stubborn. While a doctor's visit may still be in order, your sister could always try simply putting her in underwear. Eventually she will wet herself, and will probably figure the potty is better than wet pants.

Thank you! I will suggest that because her daughter is supposed to start pre-school this fall.

Some children develop at different rates, too. Is she walking and talking? If not, then she may have other issues. If she is, then like Kimbastarshine said, she is being stubborn. You say your sister already tried the reward system and that usually works. There is also the "when you go potty then you can have _____ (TV time, computer time, outdoor time, etc.)". She could try and be stubborn herself and have her daughter sit on the potty (maybe with a book?) until she does something then reward and praise her profusely. Keep us posted!

Thank you for your concerns and helpful advice! The child is walking and talking, and is quite intelligent actually, except for the potty training thing. We have no reason to suspect anything else at this time. It's weird, because my sister (or I) never ever have to check her diaper...she comes to us everytime with a clean one and says "change me, please."

Otherwise, Schneaky can always reserve her a username in advance. Hey, parents are making Facebook accounts for their kids these days. Why not an ADISC account?
