    Default Psychiatry/ mental hospital

    Hi all,

currently writing this from the ward cos I'll be in a mental hospital for a while yet, have been in since April. Anyone else been to such an institution? I'm being treated for depression and panic attacks and will probably be put on the ward for psychotherapy soonish. Just would like to know has anyone been in such a place and if so how long/ what was your experience?

    Only when I was like 6 or 7 after a half-hearted suicide attempt. <_>

I spent 108 days in the adolescent unit when I was 12/13. The locked ward housed adults and teens together, though not in the same rooms. People would get themselves restrained on purpose for fun. In those cases it was them imposing their fetish on me; while it was their idea of fun it really creeped me out

That sounds funny in a way. I wouldn't think I'll be able to stay in a place like that without going insane. What is there for like activities and other things like that. Perhaps boredom is playing a role in people to do such things?

Oh it was mainly the druggies and people with 'broken hearts' who did that. Actually there were a lot of opportunities for physical activity; basketball, tennis, swimming pool, billiards, jogging track with exercise stations, and some of us on higher 'levels' were walked to a nearby park once a week. Besides that there were a few trips to the beach, a regional park, and the movies a few times. (It's funny - once the movie was "Fire With Fire" and there were scenes of the guy escaping from a youth correctional facility)

Bear in mind most of the outings were rewards for good behavior and keeping a high points percentage. The on-site activities were only at certain times. I think the adults got to use them whenever they wanted though

That sounds frightening, or rather like a perfect story for an horror movie somehow.

Anyway, no i'm sorry. Although I think a psychotherapy is a good thing to do actually, so best wishes, get healthy again soon. :)

I had to see a psychiatrist at a residential mental facility when I was in college, but I wasn't a resident. I drove to my appointment and then drove back to college. For me it was a bit scary, especially the first time. My mom sent me when she discovered my diapers and gay porn in my bedroom. To be fair, I was having a psychotic break, and couldn't stop crying. I think she was probably looking for drugs. I was also on those, but she didn't find any. What she found must have been a much bigger surprise, and she couldn't really deal with it. I had also tried to commit suicide a couple of times. I had a lot of problems back then.

I went a couple times for half hearted suicide attempts or threats while in Foster care. I was young and they were cries for help. even as an adult, I still deal with the emotional consequences of growing up in Foster care. so does my biological mom.

spent a few times within such places.. I was on some pretty hard times, though some of the psychiatric drugs they put me on did me far more permanent damage than the original problems... I did see some people do the act-out-and-get-bound-up thing out of sheer boredom though, hell, I even did it myself once or twice. I am thankful for two things, one, I never saw a real "One Flew Over the Cucoos Nest" situation, and two, I generally avoid such places like the plague these days. One psych doc had a bedside manner that was so bad, she was pretty much run out by the patients.
funny thing, I received an almost completely different diagnosis every time I went to such places.. another thing I noticed was that I wound up in there almost every time a local psych doc prescribed something that didn't agree with me

I nearly went to one for threatening suicide when I was 12. Then my parents decided I didn't need to be there and I just needed love so they took me home.
