As of today, we've made some improvements to how rep is moderated.

If, when a rep is being given:
  • The rep is negative.
  • The rep is one of the first three reps a user has given.
  • The rep is being given by someone who has had a rep deemed invalid within the last three months.

Then, the rep will be logged, but not actually impact the recipient's rep score until that rep is reviewed by a moderator.

What does this mean?

It basically means an end to all invalid negrep, and most invalid posrep.

If you get a negative rep which turns out to be invalid, you'll never know about it. It will all be dealt with behind the scenes, and it will never have any impact on your score.

Though we still do random rep screenings and samplings, we're also going to be concentrating moderator effort a bit more on the people who've given the most invalid rep in the past.

All in all, you should notice a reduction in the amount of invalid rep.
If you do notice that you got notified of a "phantom rep", it is probably a moderated rep, and the notification is a bug. Please let us know if this happens.

Combined with our recent change to let ECs+ see rep comments on posts (which should encourage you to give out rep if you see a rep-worthy post that hasn't been repped yet), it is a great month for rep improvements.
