    Default Global Warming/ climate change

My post about the next election gave me the idea for this thread. Is climate change a problem?

It's looks like option 2 is more of a maybe than a definitive no, as in when we have concrete evidence then we'll really know whereas option 3 is saying that global warming is bollocks.

Is global warming happening? Yes and it is partly because of humans, we made the hole in the ozone worse BUT global warming does happen naturally anyway and has done so in the past. The problem isn't necessarily that global warming is occurring but that this time around it poses more of a danger to us than it would have before so the human race is a lot more vulnerable to problems such as crop shortages and changing weather patterns and here lies the issue, not that the Earth is warming but the impact it will have on us as a species and not to mention the impact it will have on the billions of other species we share the planet with.

To a certain extent, not as much as some people think.

Global warming is only part of the problem. The amount of pollutants we put into our atmosphere is measured yearly, and it's tons and tons. Who can possibly believe that's a good thing?

I feel like the political rhetoric around invalidating this issue (Global Warming) is being attempted and is largely controlled by the corporate ultra-rich (i.e., Koch Brothers, etc). They have put billions into creating and funding think tank organizations that will discredit any and all science that does not support their use or abuse of the environment in order to increase their profits.

There is a disturbing trend to attempt to discredit ALL science, because it is based on theory. So, it then follows that any hard evidence (even if we are 99.9% sure) that can be produced is refutable because it is based on theory. It is this mindset that has been created by the corporate ultra rich and has been broadcast and fostered by the right media (Newscorp, Fox etc.) that even leads to the statement in your poll "NO. the science isn't settled".

For millennia, science has been the enemy of religion. Religion (in all it's forms and permutations) stands for one purpose: to exercise control over the masses and over you as an individual through fear and ignorance. All of the scientists and scientific discovery from the dark ages on had to conceal their studies that were not sanctioned by the Church. The Church did have clerics and vaults of libraries of all of the latest scientific discoveries and inventions, and often commissioned individuals to carry out their studies and research. The Church also held the results and repressed the dispersal of scientific knowledge in order to continue to control and manipulate the masses.

It should be no surprise that the conservative political dogmas are often supported and surrounded by religion. There is good reason that Evangelical Christianity has married the rhetoric of free market political conservatism/capitalism/corporatism. It conserves and controls a perception of a way of life that is unsustainable. The only way that you can maintain the status quo; vise-vi, unregulated development and unrestrained exploitation of the earth's resources, is by casting doubt upon the empirical method and sound scientific evidence.

One of my favorite Science Fiction movies of the 60's was "Soylent Green". Soylent Green (1973) - Synopsis

The most poignant scene was where Detective Thorn finds the Soylent Oceanographic Survey Report (that it is later discovered after being studied that the report explained that the earth's oceans were dying):

Returning to his apartment, Thorn gives Roth the Soylent Oceanographic Survey Report, 2015 to 2019, a two-volume work which he took from Simonson's apartment......Meanwhile, Roth examines Soylent's oceanographic reports at the "Supreme Exchange," a library and gathering place for fellow "books." The "books" and Roth finally realize that the reports indicate a "horrible" truth which, despite reading it for themselves, they find nearly impossible to believe; soylent green isn't made from plankton, it's made from human bodies.

[Announcer doing a commercial announcement before Gov. Santini's interview]
Richard: brought to you by Soylent red and Soylent yellow, high energy vegetable concentrates, and new, delicious, Soylent green. The miracle food of high-energy plankton gathered from the oceans of the world.

We can deny science or believe the propaganda of corporate greed until we are beyond all chance for the earth's recovery and restoration.

We aren't killing the Earth, we're killing ourselves. The Earth will survive and adapt regardless of what happened to us. Who knows, maybe the Earth is the one doing this as a way of "exterminating" it's pests.

Well, I'm not a scientist, but I am a Canadian, and I can tell you that "Global Warming" is a definite issue. Can we stop it? No! But we will need to learn to adapt or die.

The polar ice caps are melting. Need proof? The Polar bears are migrating further and further south (into areas inhabited by people) due to the lack of ice for them to hunt from. The Orca (Killer Whales) are migrating further and further north due to the melting ice fields, and are overtaking the polar bears as the main predator in the north.

Unfortunately, it's too late for us to do anything about it. Granted using non-fossil fuels may slow the problem, but at this point, we've basically screwed ourselves but good. The changing weather patterns, the melting glaciers, the migrating animals are all signs of the problem, to which there is no solution.

There is a theory that anthropogenic climate change is preventing an incipient minor Ice Age. Too, the real problem is that climate cycles tend to run on longer periods than most people are comfortable dealing with; the lag on ocean currents is between 500 and 1500 years. So, you want to know what causing current changes? Things that are contemporary with Martin Luther , Michelangelo, and Aztecs.
