Thread: Parental 'Scare Tactics'

  1. #1

    Default Parental 'Scare Tactics'

I was answering Calico's http://www.adisc.org/forum/diaper-ta...-ignorant.html Thread and thought of an interesting discussion topic.

How many have ever had a parent say that if you continue to do something something completely insane, yet possibly based on fact could happen to you.

    For example...
If you make that face, it could stick that way.
If you eat before swimming, you could get a cramp and drown.
If you sit too close to the TV, you could go blind.

What are some things your parents used to say that scared you out of a certain behavior? Have any of them actually been true?

"If you're on the computer for too long you'll get square eyes." was a good one

If you eat your vegetables you will grow up big and strong. Not a scare tactic, but they still said it and it never worked....

If your a tattle tale, you will grow a tail. That one now does not seem so bad.

If you look at the sun, you will go blind. Tried it. I'm not blind!

"Cheaters never win" is another good one. Let's face it. They often do.

That's more of a philosophical thing IMO, meaning something along the lines of "if you cheat to win, you didn't really win because you din't deserve it". That's the way I've always seen it, anyway.

That's more semantics than philosophy, though. Besides, the original version is "Cheaters never prosper", and that certainly isn't true.
