Default Weird desire to travel to odd places

Does anyone want to go to an odd place? I want to go to North Korea. I've seen pics and the mountains look beautiful. I understand that I'll have a "guide" with me at all times and that I'll have to mind my P's and Q's. I also know that I won't see the whole truth. I just want to immerse myself into a Socialist culture for a week or two.

Maybe not weird but I went to Bangkok last week. Was amazing, didn't tour the islands due to a lack of time but Bangkok was good. Went fishing for Mekong Carp, absolutely massive. Saw a Muay Thai show, atmosphere was amazing. Went to Nanaplaza and saw the ladyboys in all there glory. Plus the people over there are amazing, loads of 'genuine fake' gear to buy from the market stalls very cheaply!

Of all the amazing places that there are in this world, the one that's at the top of my list, surprisingly, is Moscow, Russia. There's a certain part of me that dislikes touristy places and guided tours, and I feel like Moscow would be an amazing city to explore, but wouldn't feel like its sole purpose is to accommodate tourists. I think it'd be interesting to see Russian culture, try some genuine vodka, and if nothing else, I want to see St. Basil's Cathedral. I realize that travel in Russia, even now, is a bit of a dicey proposition, with their Soviet-era passport laws and criminal elements, but I think it'd be an adventure.

I've been to Moscow (back before the Soviet Union fell apart) also Kiev and (then) Leningrad.
I've been to Berlin when the wall was still up.
I've been to Rhodesia and South Africa before apartheid fell.
I've been to Hong Kong before it reverted to China.

Some day I'd like to revisit those places.

I hope to travel a fair amount once I graduate from college. Seeing North Korea would be interesting; however, I expect I'd find the restrictions problematic, as I love to take pictures of anything and everything...

I also think it would be amazing to see Moscow and a bit of Russian culture. If I had to chose just one city to see, though, I'd pick St. Petersburg. I've always thought the Russian Winter Palace looks fascinating.

Techorganna, absolutely! My friend from the Philippines and I are planning a trip to North Korea! I'm fascinated by the notion, and I can't quite work out why...I'm definitely keen to go to Russia, but it doesn't seem like such an dangerous, exciting adventure to me as I'll be visiting a lovely friend of mine who has assured me it's just like anywhere else, just harder to get into...China's another big one for me. I'd love to just explore. And finally, I'm planning to someday soon backpack around the Balkans :3
    Traveling rocks!

I'd love to see Ostankino tower. Willnotwill, you sound like my Grandparents. They went through the Berlin wall a week before it fell, then went back through it just after the fall. As for the new halfs in Thailand, I guess it would be interesting to see. But my biggest problem with the DPRK is that I'm American and therefore banned to go visit. I'm also banned from Cuba, but not under Cuban law but under American law. Stupid govt policies. I just don't see Fidel Castro and his government to be a threat to America. I just wish the collective nations could get along with each others' powers because in the end, it is my thought that people tend to be open to foreign people than govts to foreign govts.

My dream trip is Antarctica, preferably all the way to the South Pole. I've been within 600 miles of the North Pole, but the South Pole just seems really wild. Also, I used to want to do a camel caravan across Western Saudi Arabia and into Jordan to Aqaba, retracing T.E. Lawrence's march to capture the port. It just seems epic.

Good luck on seeing mountains if you go to north Korea as a American. Your "guide" will take you to all of the places THEY want you to go and see.
Also, you don't have to go to NK, Vice Guide to Travel has you covered!
