    Default Depression

So I have this problem, I'm always depressed, and upset all the time. I live in a constant state of it. On the outside I seem happy but inside I just feel sad. No matter what i do I can't seem to be happy. And all I seem to do is complain about everything. I don't want to see a therapist cause I don't want to be on meds. I don't know what to do.

I was depressed for a while too, about two years ago, to the point that I wanted to commit suicide. I asked to see a psychiatrist because I wanted to go on medication. Maybe it was the kind of medication, but it didn't work too well. I wasn't depressed anymore, but I certainly wasn't happy. Also, I felt more stupid and dull as a result of being on the medication. Eventually, I stopped taking it.

But anyway, you said you didn't want to go on medication. You know, you can see a psychologist or a therapist without their prescribing medication to you. For some people, it helps to talk about their problems to someone, especially if they have no one else to talk to. Anyway, for me personally, I got over my depression by reading. I read a few very inspirational novels that completely changed my outlook on life, and they really made me understand why life is worth living. If you're not into reading though, you can't really undergo this. But if you are into reading, I'd recommend reading a few novels or even some books in the self-help section of the bookstore. I have to say though, I've never read anything out of the self-help section, so I don't know if the books in that section are actually worthwhile or not.

It's a myth that therapists force medication, specifically, psychologists. Psychologists aren't trained in the medical field and have no ability to perscribe medication. They may refer you to a psychaitrist (they focus on meds) but you don't have to go if you don't want to. I can understand that you're being sad all the time and not knowing why or can't pinpoint what exactly you're upset about. I was the same way several years ago. But there's almost always a specific reason, and it's hard for anyone to help you if you're so vague.

I know the feeling of not wanting to be on meds. Been there, done that. I've actually considered going back on them recently to use as an emotional crutch (and because they made me drop weight like a mofo). But I hate talking to therapists. They're much more opinionated and judgmental than somebody in that field should be.

Vague depression like the type you're describing either has one reason that manifests itself in everything (like self-esteem) or it's actually clinical depression and your serotonin levels are messed up. Definitely get diagnosed first so you know for sure, either by your doctor or a psychologist/psychiatrist. Also, I can see that you're female. Hormonal imbalances can cause depression, which I know like the back of my hand. Sucks, doesn't it? :/

If you're diagnosed with depression, St John's Wort is the most popular herbal treatment that you can try. Dong Quai (which is good for general female health) and fish oil helped me a lot too. But even though I know a lot about holistic medicine, I'm not certified. It's best to see certified people about this so you can get the properly diagnosed and get the proper dosage for everything. Hope you feel better though. And if you need somebody to talk to, we're all here.

Im on meds. Its great. I know a faction of the forum disapproves with someone using medication for anxiety or depression, but I used to have extreme anxiety and it ruled my life. My medication really turned my life around. However, if you can turn your life around without the aid of medication, then Great! Your stronger than me.

I think its about time made an appointment with my doctor about some of my anxiety issues, or to try and get referred to a specialist, really I think I just need to get some stuff out there, to talk to someone about what's bothering me. I'm not going to dump it all here, that wouldn't be fair to the OP, but if anyone wants to talk fire me a PM.

Im somewhat autistic so most meds don't really have the desired affect, so there not an option I would even consider.

I've been battling issues myself, and have had minimal luck with medications. My primary care doc no longer wants to try treating me for these issues because of the side effects I've had to the medications she has tried. I have to go to a Psychologist now to see what can be done.
