    I'm creating this topic to avoid unneccesery negative reputation due to posting a 'meme' or to educate members that are unaware of what an internet meme is since the question is frequently asked.

    Dictionary meaning of 'meme'

    1 : an idea, belief or belief system, or pattern of behavior that spreads throughout a culture either vertically by cultural inheritance (as by parents to children) or horizontally by cultural acquisition (as by peers, information media, and entertainment media)

    2 : a pervasive thought or thought pattern that replicates itself via cultural means; a parasitic code, a virus of the mind especially contagious to children and the impressionable

    3 : the fundamental unit of information, analogous to the gene in emerging evolutionary theory of culture
    - meme pool (n.) : all memes of a culture or individual
    - memetic (adj.) : relating to memes
    - memetics (n.) : the study of memes

    4 : in blogspeak, an idea that is spread from blog to blog

    5 : an internet information generator, especially of random or contentless information

    What is an internet meme?

    An internet meme is a typically a short catchphrase generated on the internet, commonly affiliated with a picture, video, animation or any other type of media. Memes often begin on /chan/ or /b/tard websites or from other forms of media which can be quickly shared to one another via the internet (video, music, E-Mail) which shortly become popular & grow to become an internet phenomenon. These are spread from one person to another (equivalent to a virus) into internet pop culture and become commonly used as jokes, slang, pranks or as insults.

    A current example of an internet meme is being 'Rick Roll'd' where a person is tricked by hyperlink to watch the music video to 'Never Going to Give You Up'. A meme is typically changed in someway to keep contemporary either by changing the focus of the meme or altering how it is presented. Since internet memes are used frequently they can go out of popularity in a matter of days.
