    Default My Parents...

My mom has taken away her webcam from me (I get that hers and all) Her reason? I DON'T KNOW THESE PEOPLE YOU SHOULDN'T TALK TO THEM.

By that logic I should not even use this site or msn or deviantart for that matter, I get that its her cam but I'm not allowed to use it because their are strangers on the net, I'm 17 next year I'm 18 when that rolls around I don't want to but I will happily walk out that door telling everybody to fuck off.

If I state my opinion she'll tell my Dad who will threaten to beat the shit out of me.

    Just had to vent sorry.

It seems like she's just being protective of you. Parents have the problem of being protective to the point where you feel more like an object than your own person. If I were you, I would try to wait until your 18 to do the webcam stuff haha and unless you have the money to live on your own, telling everybody to fuck off isn't such a good Idear.

......but yeah. Sorry that shit is going down mang. Parents are fucking idiots, but no one's perfect.

Typical overprotective parents that think everyone on the internet is a pedo. But just remember that they are your parents and they are just trying to keep you safe. Does it seem like they are willing to negotiate, or have you already burned that bridge by whining/arguing with them when they took it?

You don't necessarily need a webcam to communicate online anyway. And if you really want to, you can buy your own webcam (they're pretty cheap) and hide it and use it when nobodies around (though I would not recommend this course of action as you could lose major trust with your parents).

It'd be a different story if you weren't still a minor however. Despite still living in their household, they shouldn't be able to stop you from communicating with other people over the net, just like they can't stop you from walking out the door and talking to people IRL.

If you could just somehow convince your parents that you are smart enough to know not to give out personal info (address and whatnot) on the web...

Also, parents are watching fear mongering news media that like to tout things like "Oh noes!11 teh Sexing!" and "Kids getting busted for producing child porn!!". Made up news stories like those aren't helping your situation.
Like Xcliber said, if you need one, get a cheap one and hide it, but for most interactions it's probably not warranted.

Will you be going to college next year or the following? That produces a lot of freedom. less than that, get your own apartment once graduated. Too bad there are no jobs because if you had one, you could by a Toshiba net book like I did. They have a built in web cam, and Skype. She probably wouldn't realize it was built in.

    Yoh,

Easy for me to say, sitting here in my tower, but...

...you're better off without one. Camera's just another method of data collection. In my opinion, such things invite disaster. But so does most of the internet.

Even if you know the people you associate with on computers, the information you place online (private data, your name, your image, your likes/dislikes, anything) is, at some point, potentially viewed by a third party. You won't know the third party. Public and private entities (or just people) really want to know all about you. Do you trust them to interpret such information accurately, or use it wisely?

Lets all go live in the woods.

There seems to be a decent amount of leverage in this. There may be a subtle way to get the webcam in exchange for computer help. Like, if you know how to do it and they don't, maybe you know stuff about webcams that they don't and can be safe with them, even if they don't understand it.
