Thread: is there a way to block websites from being access

  1. #1

Default is there a way to block websites from being access

I was wondering if there is a "easy" way for me to block websites from being accessed without having to block them on each computer in the house?

    Thanks,

I suppose more information would be desirable...

I assume all the computers are on the same network?

Yes they are all connected to the same router

Then you should access the router and see what options it has. You could possibly do it straight from there. If you don't see anything similar to that, then depending on the type of router you may be able to change the firmware.

You could try using something like OpenDNS. It allows you to block based on content, as well as based on a blacklist.

In most routers you can block by IP addresses and/or website urls.

Well, it all depends on what you want to block. If you want to block all porn from your children's eyes, you want to install something on the computers. If you just want a few sites, you can ping them to get IPs, or use the URLs and block them from the router.

Why don't you modify the HOSTS file to point to a Access denied page on said blocked websites? Or make it redirect to Google. I know my router has no such options, if I were to do it it would be through HOSTS or through another program. Does your antivirus allow website banning? It should, check if it has an internet blocking side app. Remember though, that people could use proxy servers, and there is no way to block them all. I could run a proxy off this machine and access it on a public machine downloading porn. So be careful, it's not 100% effective.

You know that websites' IP Addresses can change? Especially in the case of a server upgrade, so just stick to using the host names and let DNS deal with the IP address changes.

If i modify the host files then I will have to do that on all of the computers in the house.

The only reason I am blocking some websites is because someone that stays at my moms house is accessing stuff related to BDSM and meeting up with random guys and having sex. Im blocking them because im worried she is going to get hurt.

I have a comtrend ct-5361t. the said person knows nothing about computers at all so her trying to get away around the blocks is not a problem at all.

As far as i can tell there is no setting within the router to block by url or ip.

The proper thing to do would be to TELL HER WHAT SHE'S DOING IS SELF DESTRUCTIVE.
