Thread: file organization ideas

    Default file organization ideas

I just got a new external hard drive... and I would like to actually keep it decently organized. My files are all over the place everywhere else. Any ideas for organization?

Right now, I have folders like "music", "videos", "documents", "games" (for setup files and such). A few of those have sub-folders. I do know that I can add a prefix like "001" or "AAA" if I want the folder to appear at the top. Any other ideas I might be overlooking? Tips and category ideas welcome.

I guess how you organise your hard drive, and what categories you will need, will depend a lot on what you use your computer for. I'm, renowned for being very organised, and my main tip would be to keep up with filing stuff in the right place and also getting rid of things that you no longer need.

    I use something like this:

    Documents
    - programming
    -- one dir per language
    --- one dir per program
-- web (symlinked/junctioned to apaches DocumentRoot)
    - debates

    Videos
    - series
    -- iPod versions
    - movies
    -- iPod versions

    Pictures
    - Photography
    -- One folder per trip
    - Downloads (avatars, funny pics, etc.)

    Music
    - one folder per artist
    -- one folder per album
    - compilations

    Software
    - Games
    -- Mods
    - Tools
    -- programming

I have a few slight variations of this between my laptop on windows, my laptop on linux and my external hard drive.

That's the target. However stuff tends to build up in my desktops, home folder, WIndows download folder and root directory of my hard drive until Ito through it and sort them out every few months. I also tend to hoard installers as my Internet connection is quite slow and I want to avoid having to redownload stuff if not nessecary

For one thing, we need to realize that the "filing cabinet" metaphor does not extend appropriately into the computing world.

However, you are hardly in a position to change this.

What you might want to try is tagging. I assume you're on Windows if you need to ask about organization and/or finding files. I'm sure that Windows has something that can add meta-data tags to files and then display the files based upon tagging.

As it stands, you'll end up with a very broad tree, as you may have "porn," "fun clips," "family and friends," "anime," "fur-times," and so forth under your "videos" folder. The issue that tagging addresses is this: what if you have a movie of you naked at a fur-con? Is that "family and friends," "fun clips," "fur-times," "porn," or all of them?

Heres how I do it with my new external drive. not all the folders are listed because they may not be of interest of you because you may not have those kind of files. I hope the folders list wont bore you.
Backup [insert date folder was created]
-Applications (you may not need this)
    -Bittorent, Rapidshare, and Limewire downloads.
    --Bittorrent downloads
    --Rapidshare Downloads
    --Limewire downloads
    -Documents
--(I put subfolders for the different format extensions)
---(I put the names of the computers in the folders below)
    -Movies
    (no subfolders)
-Music (this is for music i paid for, copied from CD, and downloaded off YouTube)
-Pictures (This is for just folders with pictures, with no videos, dumped from the camera)
-Pictures And Videos (This is for any folder with both pictures and videos, dumped from the camera)
-Projects (this is for any projects I am working on, or started. Seperated with folders for the different programs)
-Saved from video sites (this folder is for videos you saved off of YouTube or other video sites)
-Videos (This is where I put my screen recorded videos, converted videos, or just folders that have just videos dumped from the camera)
-Web Downloads (this is for stuff you want to keep that you downloaded from a browser, that may be in your downloads folder, and not from file sharing sources)
and for keeping things at the top or bottom. I keep all my porn under a folder that starts with zzzzzz.
    Hope this helps.

When I get a new laptop, I usually partition the drive. That's to say, instead of just leaving the PC with the "drive C:" that the manufacturer installed, I partition that drive so it becomes smaller hard drives. I keep drive C: for the Windows installation that came with the PC, I'm keeping D: for Google's new O/S out later this year (so I can chose which O/S I use when the PC starts up), E: for my music, F: for personal diaper pics/personal life/correspondence, G: for image/partition backups/Ghosts etc, etc.

I guess it depends on the size of the hard drive that came with your PC as to how you can partition it into other drives. But I find partitioning useful, just as people would use particular drives at their workplace for storing/retrieving things.

It's probably a good idea to get someone to do it for you first time round, as you don't want to delete a partition - if you do you lose all the information you have in that partition , so several backups before you start the work is essential.

Oh god, I remember when I had files all over the place. Having just one computer would help. I try to keep things organized with category folders, and that has worked wonders for me. I also have a "Lots of Crap" folder, which contains useless downloads, etc. Sometimes when your working on a project (programming, video editing, PS2 game rebuilds) you should create a folder for that in a projects folder. The end result (ISO, movie file, etc) can be categorized like anything else. As for porn, keep it hidden and disable viewing hidden files and folders when other people are using the machine. What you want to avoid, is having several small hard drives, many computers, tons of dvd backups, you get the picture). Buy a large external hdd and use it. Clear out your internal drives of things you don't regularly use (think old episodes from torrented tv shows, game ISOs, movies) to your external drive. Keep Pictures and Music on your main drive as you'll probably need for syncing to iPods and such. If you use VMware, try not to store important files in VMs because then you'll be searching like 20 operating systems when you want to find something lol.
