Thread: Australia introduces controversial web filters

Default Australia introduces controversial web filters

Welcome to your new nanny state, Aussies...

Internet Censorship Plan Approved In Australia | Stephen Conroy

    Highlights:

The Federal Government has announced it will proceed with controversial plans to censor the internet after Government-commissioned trials found filtering a blacklist of banned sites was accurate and would not slow down the internet.

The blacklist, featuring material such as child sex abuse, sexual violence and instructions on crime, would be compiled using a public complaints mechanism, Government censors and URLs provided by international agencies.

"Most Australians acknowledge that there is some internet material which is not acceptable in any civilised society," he said.

"It is important that all Australians, particularly young children, are protected from this material."

About half of the sites on the list were not related to child porn and included a slew of online poker sites, YouTube links, regular gay and straight porn sites, Wikipedia entries, euthanasia sites, websites of fringe religions such as satanic sites, fetish sites, Christian sites, the website of a tour operator and even a Queensland dentist.
Some of you know I'm against any type of censorship. Well, I about shit my pants when I read this.

I imagine that the Australian government is like the British government, except in a sort of different dimension where they are slightly more evil and much more organised.

I don't think anything on the internet should be censored. I might have considered blocking child porn to be a good idea, but my government has proved that it doesn't understand what that is... I remember an award winning art piece from New York being removed from the Tate gallery earlier this year because it was 'indecent'.
So if they can't even block child porn correctly, one thing that you'd expect everybody to support, then what chance have we got with *everything* else?

I hate this nonsense about 'protecting children'. If they cared about that then they'd make legislation making computer retailers sell computers with child protection software already on it, and pump some money into educating parents.

From what I've read, it seems the Australian government is a whole lot worse than the British government. When I read the first half of Chillhouse's post, I thought in theory that the banning would be okay - 'child sex abuse, sexual violence and instructions on crime' should be banned, but I find it ridiculous that they can even think about using software to compile a list, or banning sites like wikipedia.

I thought Australia was improving when they announced plans to introduce an R18 rating certificate for games, but it is quite clear that the country is getting worse.

I guess it is a democracy, so if Australians want this kind of censorship, fair enough.

None of those things should be blocked. Censorship is bad because it gives all this power to a small group of people, and they get to decide for everyone else what 'child sex abuse, sexual violence and instructions on crime' is.
Some sixty year old prude could decide that art containing the nude behinds of babies is child porn.
Or he could decide to ban rape fetish websites which include videos of two willing participants acting out a rape scene.
And for the 'instruction on crime' bit... well, that's just stupid. You can't ban information, even if the information is "how to make a bomb".

If they actually gave a shit about preventing child porn, they'd stop it at the source. This is just a way for them to gain more power and dominate the public. It's fucking ridiculous.

The only thing that pisses me off about this is I now have to put up with threads like this filled with misinformed people on practically every forum I frequent.

There's a reason I stay out of discussion on foreign politics - because I don't understand their systems.
And there's a reason I'm not offering a opinion in this thread - it was overly dramatic from the start.

I'm more pissed off at the ignorance than I am about the news.

I'm the same way, Lukie. I know nothing about foreign politics. For as much as I've tried to learn, I still find that because I can't apply this knowledge regularly, because I simply don't have the experience to live underneath the standards of the foreign country in question.

Well, you could enlighten us then.

This isn't a jab at australia. It could just as easily happen in canada. I just don't like censorship.
