Thread: Need Help Badly [Ubuntu]

    Default Need Help Badly [Ubuntu]

Okay, I really need some help here. Once again, involving Ubuntu.

I decided to give it another shot. I set up a 100 GB partition on my external hard drive, and I installed Ubuntu to that partiton. Now, the install was fine, but now I'm having some SERIOUS problems.

First off: Windows Vista won't boot anymore.

    GRUB loading.
    error: no such disk
    grub rescue:
This is with the drive both plugged in and not.

Second: When I try to boot Ubuntu, I get error 17.

I really need help. I don't care about Ubuntu at this point, but I really need to be able to get back on to Vista. Help!

Go into your BIOS options, then set internal HDD (or First Hard Disk or Internal Hard Disk or whatever your computer calls it) as the (first) boot drive.

EDIT: Failing that, do the following at the grub prompt:

    Code:
    rootnoverify (hd0,0)
    chainloader +1
    boot
Depending on how your PC is set up, that should either bring up Vista, or your recovery partition. If it brings up your recovery partiton change the 0,0 bit to 0,1 .

It already was, but I re-did it to make absolute sure. I'm still getting the errors.

    Unknown Command "rootnoverify"
I tried the other ones too, those didn't work either.

Do you have your Vista CD? If so, boot to that, enter recovery console, and run "fixmbr" to remove grub.

Also, I made a typo in that post. It should be:
    Code:
    rootnoverify (hd0,0)
    not
    Code:
    rootnoverify hd(0,0)

I've booted from my Vista CD, but in my system recovery options, I don't have a recovery console option.

Select the command prompt option, then type "fixmbr". If there is no command prompt option, post a list of the options there.

Sorry about all the typos and wrong terms and stuff, but I'm on my iPod ATM, and doing this from memory without a PC in front of me is hard.
