Thread: Deep Lyrics

    Default Deep Lyrics

I just herd a song that I love on the radio, but this time I really listened to the lyrics. I had chills for the rest of the day, and was almost in a state of shock due to the intensity of the song.

Rules are simple, post a deep song and explain why. Try to post 1 or 2 songs, not too many.

Here's the song the got to me. YouTube - The Offspring - The Kids Aren't Alright

When we were young our future was so bright
The old neighborhood was so alive
And every kid on the whole damn street
Was gonna make it big and not be beat

Now our neighborhood's cracked and torn
The kids are grown up but their lives are worn
    How can one little street
    Swallow so many lives

    Chances blown
    Nothing's free
Longing for what used to be
    Still it's hard
    Hard to see
    Fragile lives, shattered dreams
    (Whoa!)

Jamie had a chance, well she really did
Instead she dropped out and had a couple of kids
Mark still lives at home cause he's got no job
He just plays guitar and smokes a lot of pot

    Jay committed suicide
    Brandon OD'd and died
What the hell is going on
    The cruelest dream, reality

    Chances blown
    Nothing's free
Longing for what used to be
    Still it's hard
    Hard to see
    Fragile lives, shattered dreams

    Chances blown
    Nothing's free
Longing for what used to be
    Still it's hard
    Hard to see
    Fragile lives, shattered dreams

I think most songwriters try to make their music more than superficial as far as lyrics; at least, those who write music that's not made to please everyone!

    Here's one - it's long:

YouTube - Of Montreal - The Past is a Grotesque Animal

The past is a grotesque animal
And in its eyes you see
How completely wrong you can be
How completely wrong you can be

The sun is out, it melts the snow that fell yesterday
Makes you wonder why it bothered

These were the only lines that really got to me, but it struck home hard. I've spent many nights lying sleepless in my bed agonizing over stupid things I've done in the past. None of them are even that bad. And other times they don't bother me at all, I can actually laugh at the same situations that I suffered through the night before. It's weird, but those lines explained it pretty well.

    YouTube - Elliott Smith- Angeles

someone's always coming around here trailing some new kill
says i've seen your picture on a hundred dollar bill
and what's a game of chance to you to him is one
    of real skill
so glad to meet you, angeles

picking up the ticket shows there's money to be made
go on and lose the gamble, that's the history of the trade
that you add up all the cards left to play
    to zero
and sign up with evil, angeles

    don't start me trying now
cause i'm all over it, angeles

i could make you satisfied in everything you do
all your secret wishes could right now be coming true
and be forever with my poison arms
    around you
no one's gonna fool around with us
no one's gonna fool around with us
so glad to meet you, angeles

I interpreted that song as if he was the devil and the other person was someone trying to get what he wants. I'm not sure if that's the right interpretation, but I like it.

Deep: do you mean open to interpretation, with obscure meaning in the lyrics?

Or deeply resonant with the listener, dredging up deep feelings, especially of nostalgia?

Or simply about deep subjects, with possibly clear and simple lyrics, but with subject matter of depth, complexity, and importance? Many great songs are like this.

Like Billy Joel's "Piano Man" YouTube - Billy Joel *RARE* Piano Man (Old Grey Whistle Test)

Yes, they're sharing a drink they call loneliness
But it's better than drinkin' alone
    also

    ...when I wore a younger man's clothes
The gist of the song; and so applicable to so many of our own members.

One layer of meaning in your song is it has to be taken with, and in opposition to the Who's The Kids Are Alright: the reference can't be accidental. As long as we are on nostalgia, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gs2kFrGluKs

I always like Ok Go's Hello My Treacherous Friends lyrics-wise. I personally choose to interpret the friends and spiders as thought patterns which makes about perfect sense to me.

    Lyrics:

One of my favorite bands (bob hund) are the creators of some of the best lyrics I've ever heard. Sadly, they're in Swedish. If I find the time and energy I'll translate some for them for you later.
