Thread: Microsoft Dreamspark (free legal MS software)

Default Microsoft Dreamspark (free legal MS software)

    http://dreamspark.com

This site is run by MS and allows students (high school and college in the US, college in the rest of the world) to download

    • Windows Server editions
    • Visual Studio Professional
    • SQL Server
    • XNA
    • CCR and DSS toolkit (I'm not too sure what this one does)
    • Expression Studio

for free off MS. The software selection mightn't be of interest to non-geeks (it doesn't have Office, XP or Vista, and won't have Windows 7), but for some people this will definitely be useful. My mum is going back to college, so I will be using this in a few days.

The express and professional editions are available from the site, but since the express versions of VS and SQL server are free anyway, you are better off getting the pro versions.

I've heard of it before and my computer instructor and fellow students are interested in it. I'm mostly a Linux person myself, but I like being fluent in as many platforms as possible, so I personally am interested. I may look at getting a copy for myself.
One reaction to this is that Microsoft is scared cash-stripped students will learn and become familiar with Linux and Open Source software instead of Windows and Microsoft's other software because they simply cannot afford it.

Best of all, the school has all of these ISO's accessible from anywhere, so when I heard of this, I grabbed all the product keys I could get, started all of these downloading to my home server through the use of Remote Desktop, and I was getting approximately 3 MB/s [as in megaBYTES per second] down, on average. That's like, an XP CD in about 3 and a half minutes. And, it's actually legal. Because we know how much Exchange Server and the other softwares cost.

So, I hate to say it, but your Dreamspark is sorta 'small-time'. I used that to grab a few keys, too, don't get me wrong, but you should really see if you/your school participates in the MSDNAA. The way I see it, even if you don't use the keys anytime soon, you've always got them, so take what you can, give nothing back [besides the tuition you paid for college. :P ]

    1. MSDNAA requires your college to pay MS some money, so not as many schools will do it.
    2. MSDNAA is for colleges only so my school doesn't do it :P. EDIT: And some US high schools according to wiki.
    3. On a more serious note, I asked my mum to ask about this this morning, and MSDNAA is only for IT students in her college. (she's not doing IT.) Where as Dreamspark is for all students.

So yeah, MSDNAA might be better, but that doesn't make Dreamspark useless.
