It not that it cancels peristaltic activity , but it slows you down so much it's absurd , your bowel movement become something i can only describe as hard potters clay in texture(clay becomes "workable" by using water to lubricate and the spiking on the wheel along with various pressures allow you to form it) and about the size of small stones stuck together, you became filled with these until you feel like moving your bowels and with great effort, exhaustive effort you can painfully pass a 4 or 5 of these Stone sized pellets ( if you have ever seen rabbit turds scale it up a bit to human size and thats what you have)so of course with your system slowed that much and not eliminating them much they become harder and more stuck together everyday and become even harder to pass ,psyllium husk like Metamucil type products bulk up the stool and will make the situation worse , saline laxatives can not possibly draw enough water in the bowel to soften it , stimulant laxatives will liquiefy the contents of your upper bowel ( stimulant laxatives continue to stimulate until eliminated from the body, so imagine severe cramps that double you over) as the liquid stool tries to find its way around all that impacted stool that is constpating you, till your soiling yourself unfortunately your having a really bad few days from that stimulant but net result is 0 because all your doing is churning over what you last ate and not getting much nutrition .
Lubricant such as mineral oil enema can not penetrate the stool and yes it will make it slippery , doesn't make it any easier and eventually you will just be leaking oil all the time ( also it's realy realy bad idea to use mineral oil with a stimulant like Senna , theres an interaction that causes the mineral oil to seperate and not stay emulsified that makes it kinda like sludge , that can potentially cause a blockage, this was the life of many pain patients stool softeners like Colace can help temporarily for short time but if used daily it rapidly loses effectiveness and for those of us with permanent problems it's of little value. ( opiate medications are potentially god sent in relieving certain pain ,but causes the most wicked constipation you can imagine to the 10 th power ) the only way to treat this was not ideal however was the "gold standard" of treatment that helped was Lactulose , Chronulac, Christalose it has lots of names all over the world ! It is a snythetic sugar derived from Lactose in milk , it is a common food additive and sweetner (anybody whos ever pigged out on "sugar free" candy like gummy bears or gummy worms and then found a nearby toilet your best friend ,thats why !) It is a sugar not absorbed by the body , while body is breaking it down it forms alot of gas , draws liquid into the stool ,causes gas so it thins and softens the stool ,and anything that creates gas also activates the gut so now you have an activated gut and thinner stool that has less transit time that rather than causing blow by diarrhea around the impacted mass of constipation it's like bulldozer and pushes that hard stool out(they are hard to find but there are suppositories called Cee too that when used will releive occasional constpation because they create gas that fills the rectum and promotes bowel movement), if you take it three times a day you will have three or more soft stools a day ,and even though it softens the stool and has a laxative action it's not habit forming, because you don't develope a flaccid bowel that depends on a laxative to trigger it , because it's laxative and stool softening action is a secondary action .it is used as laxative stool softener often by doctors , because it works that way,it's very safe and effective and in large amounts it's only side effect is needing diapers so why not use it to your advantage( and in this particular group I don't think diapers are much of an issue) .if i failed to address anyones question my apologies and just ask anything I didn't answer.
You can also take large doses hourly to trigger a fast massive dump and then back off it to the normal three times a day to keep the system unblocked.there is a range in teaspoons to use , it is commonly used in school age kids afraid of the school bathrooms because it's sweet it agrees with kids , pediatricians who get constipated kids all the time because the child doesn't want to use the toilet at school, will have parents give a spoonful before breakfast ,because the more someone resists going the more it's gonna force the issue so around 12:30 1:00 the child soils themselves in class ,it doesn't take that happening many times before the child is raising there hand when they need to go because they know what happens if they don't and you can just taper off giving it to them,of course a kid doesn't know the cause and effect, but the fear of that happening keeps them motivated.
In the US for some dumb reason it requires a prescription so you don't have to eat alot of gummy bears [emoji23] but the rest of the world it's over the counter.there is one actual use medically for it in certain type of encephalopathy because it removes excess amonia from the blood , if you have a liver problem you take hi doses and need diapers , if its the first time you have had this type of encephalopathy generaly your comatose and they give it rectaly by retention enema, and once our conscious again they start you on it orally ,it doesnt have any sort of laxative action unless taken orally .
I have IBS-C compounded to unreal proportions by the opioids , this was the only thing that helped until about 2 years ago , because of the drug problem thats sweeping the globe you all have probably heard Narcan, Naltrexone mentioned on the news as a drug that will reverse opiates effects ,many OD of heroin or fentanyl has been saved using this drug , the opiate OD basicly tells your body you don't need to breathe and your heart stops .
But 2 years ago a new formulation they named Movantik came out , it is only active in the bowel and unblocks the Mu opioid receptor that cause constipation so between the lactulose and Movantik , i still get my pain control it does not effect that, but it unblocks that receptor in the bowel , and the lactulose handles the IBS-C ,The only caveat to lactulose is you need to find the right amount for you ,because too much even the continent folks will need diapers, since its not actually a laxative it does something that no laxative does ,which is the more you try and hold it the less choice you have , an actual laxative promotes/encourages a bowel movement , lactulose will make you have one without a vote if you try and hold it .
Since its a sweet syrup with a little bit of nutty taste I drink alot of decaff coffee instead of splenda(T1 diabetic) three times a day i sweeten my coffee with it.
Miralax as has been mentioned is beleived to be safe for long term use it contains an ion that is poorly absorbed by the body, if any of you are old enough or unlucky enough to have had to undergo a colonoscopy Miralax is what you used to empty yourself out , Go-lytely is same stuff , many doctors do the bowel cleansing that way pour half a bottle of Miralax into 32 oz of Gatorade drink chase with another 32 oz of Gatorade and pray you got the optional seat belt for your toilet because your gonna need it . For some reason I can't tolerate it, I have tried drinking it and even had the hospital inject it into a naso gastric tube same result it hits my stomache and i vomit .there are certain medications commonly available that do the same thing, one of them strangely is an anti-emetic they tried giving me.

I've heard that as well. If you use stimulant laxatives to force yourself to go too much eventually you quit being able to go on your own.

That's got a bit about it down in the 'risks' section.
