My favorite band is Avenged Sevenfold based on personal reasons, but I'm definitely a prog metal guy. Dream Theater, Symphony X, Periphery, Between The Buried And Me, and Protest The Hero are my top five, no order.

I just saw behemoth and I'll be seeing lamb of God and amon amarth later this month. I'm more into black and death metal with some power metal in there.

Have you been spying on me? You took my favorites right from the tips of my fingers. I'll add a few though.

Opeth, Nevermore, and Redemption. That fit right in that category of prog metal without that cheesy singing.

I'd like to add a band outside of the category, not very popular, but a former local band that disbanded after a death. From Louisiana, I present Acid Bath..

They are a very unique bands from the early to mid 90s. They are considered doom metal. The music is all over the place. I will say that the lyrics are very dark.

This is a very dark love song. The music is beautiful.

If you like the songs you should check out the two albums that they have. Most of it is worth a listen.

I believe you and I have discussed our very similar tastes in music before. :)

Oops lol. Sorry.

I don't consider myself a metalhead but I listen to some.

The bands I most consistently listen to are Mastodon, Black Sabbath, some Metallica, I think Motorhead (rip Lemmy) can also be consider metal and I listen to them a lot. There are others that I listen that I'm not remembering or that I don't listen that much.

When I was a teenager I used to listen to more heavier music, but it was mostly nu-metal, I don't regret it as did enjoy listening to it but I'm not proud of it either lol.

I listen to quite a lot of different music, but metal is definitely my favourite. My all-time favourite band is Avenged Sevenfold, and my other favourites are Killswitch Engage and In Flames. Those are all pretty "generic" bands, but I also love to listen a lot of more heavier stuff and more less-known bands.

Long time listening to all sorts of weird and wonderful metal. My "gateway" band was Maiden, of whom I'm still a huge fan, but have listened to all sorts over the years, tending more to the murkier realms of the underground, both way back when tape trading was a thing and in more recent years. There's just so much amazing stuff out there when you dig a little deeper.

Absolutely have to mention Slugdge at this point. Lovecraftian themed utterly twisted death metal about intergalactic slug deities. Sounds bonkers, but it's absolutely incredible and blows a lot of far more well known bands out of the water.

Here's my Bandcamp collection, for those who enjoy the more underground side of things.

I don't listen to metal as often as I used to, but maybe I should. Back in middle & high school I listened to Iron Maiden and Ozzy Osbourne a lot.

See, I often get confused by the difference between metal and rock. My favorite genre is rock for sure, but some of the rock I listen to would probably be classified as metal as well. Well, I listed my favorite albums in the other thread, so that pretty much says it all.

Metal has more of a darker/faster sound than rock.
The earlier comparison would be like

Black Sabbath - War Pigs (metal)
Vs
Def Leppard - Pour Some Sugar on Me (rock)

Today however there's so many different sub genres with their own sub genres.

We have Dream Theater who's all over the board across different Genres.

You have Opeth who can play some of the heaviest screaming metal and within the same song, it changes dramatically to an acoustic, jazzy, beautifully sung rock that relaxes you.

You have Children of Bodom who makes metal with keyboards.

There's a guy on YouTube that's actually plays different style vs style so people can tell the difference.

When it all comes down to it, it came from rhythm and blues.

I remember a part in one of the Back to the Future movies had a scene when Fox plays at a school dance in the 1950s I think and he starts playing Eddie Van Halen. The crowd just looks at him like WTF!?
Now we play some metal of today for the Van Halen crowds of the day. In sure they'd react the same way.

In fact, today's metal would never have been around if it weren't for a mistake. That raunchy chords in guitars today came about after someone accidently poked a hole in an amp.

Well, as long as the music isn't full of deep screaming only, then its all good to me. Exception being Rammstien assuming they would be classed as metal, love Rammstien. XD Then again it's not all deep screaming which is probably why.

Metal is not all about screaming gore. It's not all about Satan. Metal gets a bad rep, in regards to tattoos, lyrics, looks, and so much more.

I have an uncle in law that claimed to be a musician BUT he was a hardcore bible thumping Christian. I let him listen to a band called Woe of Tyrants that's actually a melodic death Christian metal band. His initial thought was evil. He judged by the heavy, fast, riffs that the band was unfit for him for a Christian guy. I never told him they were a Christian band, but you get the point.

Most death metal bores me. I respect the talent. It's just the repetitive inaudible growling. The fast, heavy riffs. The fast as you can kick and play snare.

I'd recommend Opeth. They do growl in some of their older stuff, but it's more understandable than a lot of it.
They matured more in to the melodic slow metal (more rockish) with singing these days.

https://youtu.be/ReA58FkwMrk

Opeth - Deliverance
This is the one song that goes from heavy to slow melodic jazz rock.

https://youtu.be/qEaf9LqIUZQ

Opeth - Windowpane

A complete slow song. Beautiful music that you'd never hear on the radio.

https://youtu.be/JHq9yMXw3iA

Opeth - Cusp of Eternity

Most recent work.

One of my favorite bands is called Symphony X. They've been around since the mid 90s. They have a great discography. They play heavy music but sing very well. Russell has one of the best voices for metal. Romeo (guitar) is one of the best in the industry. The rest of the band glues it all together.

https://youtu.be/6uY6MNuMdUU

Symphony X - Kiss of Fire

A great beginner song to learn what they are made of... it has a lot of the ingredients that the band is made of.

https://youtu.be/xZe-Pmgq9DY

Symphony X - Without You

A mellow song with powerful, clean, singing.

Most bands you find away from the radio and other mainstream media are the best of the best.

Otherwise it's music that gets hammered into your head and gets catchy over time after endless airplay.

That one is my personal favorite SX song. Unfortunately, the only Opeth song I know at the moment is "Ghost Of Perdition", but I've really been meaning to get into them for a long time.

I wouldn't call myself a Metalhead as I enjoy all sorts of music, but I do enjoy metal music and have some really good metal songs.

I'm not too big a fan of the stereotypical "Satan Death Metal" that most people think of that gets a bad rep (though there are a couple Satan Death Metal songs I like, as well as the occasional Screamo Metal song). Most of the metal I like is a little slower, but still powerful, and I prefer the metal that has fun and won't take itself seriously.

For instance, there's a children's metal band, Hevisaurus, that mainly does a bunch of metal songs about Dinosaurs and other similar topics. I absolutely LOVE them. They sound great, and are just a ton of fun. It's music I can listen to while both feeling little, and aren't annoyed by unlike most kids music (the only other stuff I can enjoy is Disney). Definetly check them out if you're an ABDL and like Metal Music.

I was so close to adding that song but I felt I would end up adding too many songs. I could listen to their albums without skipping.

Opeth is unique in their own way. The Damnation album and Deliverance album were initially planned to be a 2 disc album, but the record company didn't allow them to.
They are my favorite albums with Blackwater Park right behind.

What I find interesting is that most metal fans would give you the shirt off their back to help you out, while a lot of the Bible thumping Christians are much more harsh when it comes to helping others out.

I'm listening to a cross between metal and hard rock myself. Love Black Sabbath, Opeth has some very good stuff, some of the newer bands like Five Finger Death Punch, Bullet for My Valentine and Trivium are great, and I still love Megadeth and Metallica. From there, I also like bands that are more towards hard rock--Volbeat is a great one (saw them live last month and got to do a meet and greet with the band!), Shinedown, Skillet, Seether, Godsmack, Halestorm, there's a whole list of newer hard rock out there that is great!

No, I know that, wasn't insinuating that it was any of those things. As I said, it's just more of a matter of not knowing exactly what is and isn't metal. Because according to various people it could differ. What one views as metal, someone else might not. I just know a lot of people who tend to say they like metal, they typically mean the screaming kind.

For example, I would consider System of a Down metal, but I don't know if others would consider it metal, I imagine some would just consider it rock. So eventually I just started calling everything rock. XD Then what about bands like Nine Inch Nails ... the hell genre are they? XD It just really confuses me. Even when you look up the genre of a band it's typically a bunch of genre and never just one.

Well, ya, religious people do that a lot. My sisters husband would buy a Drowning Pool album and then throw it away weeks later. Then he would get a hankering to listen to it again and buy it again >.>. It's tough to be religious lol. XD

Ok .. so it's called death metal. See that is what I mean though .. so many different genre .. and to me it's just all rock, just different styles.
