A good question! Something I haven't honestly considered. Yet, I think that a shitty piece in its native language will always be a shitty piece when translated. You can't polish a turd, as they say!

I do not read excessively as I hope I could but David Sedaris is not bad.

Holy hell, I forgot about Eoin Colfer.
iirc, Artemis Fowl series? I bought Time Paradox in the first few days of its release. God I loved that series.

I'm disappointed in the lack of Vonnegut in this thread!

My turn:

- Kurt Vonnegut Jr.
- George Orwell

I could list more, but these two are the only authors that while reading their books I had to look away and just say "holy shit."

If I had to pick one and only one, I'd likely go with James Burke. Though not his later stuff (like Circles), as it crosses the line for me that divides subdued incredulity and flaunting a corpus of research.

I'm surprised I didn't see more Russian authors on here... :O

Fyodor Dostoyevsky - Crime and Punishment anyone?

John Steinbeck - ...brilliant; East of Eden and Of Mice and Men were great

Franz Kafka -absolutely brilliant for his time...really

Hermann Hesse - Siddhartha is the bomb, as are all of his other works.

Aldous Huxley - Brave New World stands out...

Edgar Allan Poe - Good lord; there was something wrong with this man haha

Kurt Vonnegut - Slaughterhouse 5 and Cat's Cradle were fantastic

Ken Kesey - One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest - enough said.

J.K. Rowling - c'mon, who doesn't like Harry Potter

Ernest Hemingway - ...um, yea; he's good
