William Shakespeare
Gabriel Garcia Marquez
Miguel de Cervantes
Kurt Vonnegut
George Orwell
Nikolai Gogol
Franz Kafka
Albert Camus
Phillip Pullman

I do love Harry Potter as all sensible people should but wouldn't quite count J.K. Rowling as one of my favourite writers. The above are just what came instinctively.

I really don't read enough books, so I've probably missed out on a lot of great authors.

The first one who's books I read just because of the author was Orson Scott Card. By all accounts a religious bigot, but a great author none the less.

Other favorites (that won't shock anybody) includes Douglas Adams, J. K. Rowling, J. R. R. Tolkien, Franz Kafka, Chuck Palahniuk and Swedish author John Ajvide Lindqvist (who you might know as the guy who wrote the book that became the movie "Let the Right One In").

I'm currently reading Party Monster (or "Disco Bloodbath" if you prefer) by James St. James who has a hilariously funny style of writing about drugs and murder. On the side I'm trying out some of H. P. Lovecraft's shorter stories. Something tells me I'll be reading a lot more of that soon. Good stuff.

What if it sucks until it's translated? Could I somehow write an intolerable collection of filth that, when translated into Spanish, became lyrical and pleasant?

So far, nobody mentioned Patrick O'Brian. Any O'Brian fans around?
