It is kind of country specific. In the UK and Ireland a vacuum cleaner is known as a "Hoover". As in: "Go hoover the lounge". In Germany you wouldn't say "Go Miele the bedroom". So, it seems the Americans are on their own with that one.

I've just worked my way through 13 pages of comments on this topic and found it very interesting. I've never been fortunate enough to witness anyone in "the wild" wearing aside from the clearly disabled or elderly. I do look of course, but have not had any sightings. I'll never stop looking...
