I feel like understanding is the cure to our problems. If you had lived in the shooters shoes you would understand why he shot the other kid and if he had lived in the other kids shoes he probably wouldn't have shot him.

High school students are too young to carry concealed. Minimum age across the country is 21.

You are correct that high school students in the US are to young to carry concealed, but are incorrect for the age across the US. South Dakota issues concealed weapons permits to 18 and up. Federal law restricts the sale of handguns and handgun ammunition to age 21 and older. Therefore, South Dakota allows someone to carry a weapon 3 years before they can purchase ammunition for it. In Oregon, I legally had a handgun with me at the age of 18, but could not conceal it.

Luvs, good job keeping a semi clean head in a stressful time. Hope you're doing okay after the whole incident yourself. When I witnessed a stabbing I pretty much shut down for a few days afterward to process the intensity of the violence I saw (AKA, I did a lot of bowling), hope you're still feeling good.

As for blaming, I won't point my finger at any one thing, as that would be foolish. Music, video games, other forms of media, are not to blame. Any one with two neurons can notice the difference between the world of media, and the world of reality.

Parents, or to use a more broader term here, a trusted adult figure, can do many things to solve a problem. Sometimes they do many things to not help a problem, abuse, neglect, force, etc.etc. One reason why I also stress the importance of trusted adult figures, there are some things I would never converse with my parents, but I would with my coordinator at my volunteer work, or my adviser at college, or one of my many other confidents.

And then, we have to accept the weirdest reason of all. People are weird, insane creatures, and because of that we will do, and continue doing, weird and insane things. Sometimes the biggest things in the world, have the simplest explanations. Maybe this was just someone who wanted to shoot someone on his own personal reasons. If that was the case, this really sucks because we first couldn't blame anyone for anything, but also because we couldn't fix that.

While I think "empathy" is a more suitable word than "understanding", I agree with you. I think the biggest source of humanity's problems is that people tend to be greedy and selfish more often than empathetic and generous.

You're right. People have really stopped following "The Golden Rule," which is, "Treat others the way you want to be treated." Would that shooter have wanted to get shot? Absolutely not. But he didn't care, whether he was doing it just to be cool or for revenge or whatever, he did it for his own selfish reasons and he endangered the life of a fellow human being. That's never okay, and I hope he gets caught and punished.

i'm sorry, but if i saw that i'd have run the shooter over. i've been in too many close calls with school shootings to let some little dickhead get away.
also, it's not the music, or the movies, or any of the arts it's just the common way americans explain their ideals to one another. if you can't talk or reason with another person that got the best of you the next best thing is to mame or kill them. whether it's gun, pipebomb, knives, brass knuckes, what have you, americans will beat the shit out of one another to get the last word. we are the land of revenge.

hmmm Charlotte, there have been a lot of shootings in our fair city as of late. I actually did hear about this on the news. Were you interviewed on the news at all?

There are pysch reasons as to why no one else called the cops, the bystander effect, and what not. You are obviously beyond that and did the right thing.

On a related note... I have discovered that our neighborhood is controlled by the Bloods. I was out driving the other evening and noticed a group of 15-20 young (black) men milling around... all wearing their plain red t-shirts.

I suppose this is a good thing... I'd rather be in the middle of one gang's territory than on the border.

This is right by East Meck high school... for the locals.

And what about adults committing crimes?

I sure hope nobody is thinking that teens are becoming a bunch of violent idiots because of that, it would be exactly like judging ABs from the guy who texts random school girls about wearing diapers and send them pictures of their used diapers.
