Well, it's partly an inherited thing, my brother's had 2 surgeries on his, and although my mom never did, she suffered from back pain for many years.
I've had back problems since I was about 13 or 14, starting with just a lot of lower back pain. I think I probably didn't help it much when I was a kid because my brother and I used to have contests to see who could lift the most, but neither of us knew anything about the correct way to lift, you know, lift with your legs, not your back. So I've been lifting heavy objects for years, and doing damage to my back, plus I've had 2 auto accidents that didn't help either. And when I was in the military, I fell off of the back of a trailer backwards when the wrench I was using to tighten a fitting on a fuel tank slipped off and I couldn't step back to catch myself because the tailgate was closed on the trailer. I fell backwards and landed on my head and right shoulder, and causing my right hand to twitch uncontrollably for about a minute. I think that was the start of the ruptured disc in my neck, but it took almost 20 years for it to develop. It wasn't long after that though that the rest of my real problems began. I've had 1 surgery on my neck and 2 surgeries on my lower back now, and will most likely need another one in the near future to correct some things that weren't done right the last time,(another long story, "sigh"). My surgeon has told me that I don't have a normal disc in my entire back, and it's only a matter of time before something else happens that will require surgery.
I've also made another post on the "surgery causing incontinence" thread that explains a lot more about what I've gone through with this.
