Alright, I'll give this one away for babymikey. This is how our code in this thread works:

The above string is the hex-encoded version of "Hello World". Hexadecimal is a way of representing binary numbers in a base close to what humans can process within a concise amount of space. Hex is basically a different base - base-16 in this case. That means that to count in hex, you'd go:

And so on, and so forth. The advantage of hex is that the number of digits it has is a power of two (2 raised to the power of 4, or 2 × 2 × 2 × 2, = 16).

Now, the way computers turn 1s and 0s into text is based on a code called ASCII. It's basically a numerical code that translates binary numbers into characters. There are exactly 256 ASCII characters, 127 of which are considered "printable", or suitable for actual text formatting. Only this range of 127 characters is used for English text, while binary code uses all 256 characters. Think of ASCII as one of those plain substitution number codes you used as a kid, you know, where 1 = A, 2 = B, 3 = C, and so on. In decimal ASCII:

64 = A (roughly, I don't remember exactly)
65 = B
...
97 = a
98 = b

Converting that to hexadecimal, we get 64 decimal = 40 hex, and 97 decimal = 61 hex. Also note that hex is always expressed with an even number of digits, so each character will be 2 digits even if the first one is a zero.

Of course, converting manually this isn't a fun process, because you would need an ASCII reference chart and would be encoding characters by hand. Because ASCII is a universal standard for computers, nearly every programming language has support for getting numerical codes for a character, and hex converters are trivial to code in just about any language. I chose to write mine in PHP, but you could easily write one in Javascript, C, Java, Python, Ruby, or just about anything else. Hope that makes a little bit of sense now.
