Default The End of Time (2012) (HSE)

My submission for the Halloween Story Contest! Yay!! It is based off the End-of-the-World Theories surrounding December 21st, 2012.

By the way, I do not believe that any of this will happen.

Enjoy! It took me like...all night to make it.

By the way, the person in Houston (The main PoV) is based off of me.

"And now, my fellow Americans, I ask for your support and understanding in these dire times ahead. We, the people of this great nation, will pull together and defeat whatever challenges are thrown at us. Special Forces have been deployed in Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Houston, Phoenix, New Orleans, Philadelphia, Seattle, and Washington D.C. I can assure you, the American public, that any force that tries to destroy mankind, supernatural or otherwise, will be met by heavy resistance. Thank you, and God Bless us all."

I closed my laptop. Rising from my bed, I looked up at my bedroom wall, which was decorated with every theory about the Apocalypse that had ever been proclaimed. Naturally they were shrunken so that I could fit them all on there, but when I wanted to read one, all I had to do was touch anywhere on the message, and it would project into the air. I had debunked every single theory yet. Except for one.

In 11 days, mankind would change forever.

My eyes were drooping. I had accidentally left my projector on the night before, and as a result, it could've been permanently damaged. I had stayed up until 2:00 the night before, trying to pull apart the Mayan Calendar Theory. Something just didn't make sense, but I couldn't quite figure out what it was. The arrival of Planet X had already been confirmed to be false by NASA scientists, but the public wouldn't listen to them. Riots broke out in several cities across the world, such as Rio de Janerio, Madrid, Moscow, New York City, and London. The government had a tough time containing them, but they somehow managed. Now, two months later, everyone on the entire planet was eagerly awaiting the day to come. It was 10 days away. 10 days, and 17 hours exactly.

Mass amounts of people were committing suicide, more were flying to Holy Cities such as Rome, Vatican City, and Jerusalem.

Still others didn't believe anything was going to happen, and were planning Christmas parties and celebrations for the 23rd, 24th, and even the 25th of December.

Myself, I wasn't sure what to think anymore. Despite the fact that every single theory before had failed, it seemed, for some reason, this one wouldn't. Already, strange things were happening.

4:45 P.M.

Las Vegas, NV

The casino was packed. Hundreds of people were crowding the bar, and every single gambling table was filled to the maximum, some even overflowing. I kept my index finger just above the trigger of my rifle, ready to fire at a moment's notice.

"Sergeant Thompson, report your status, over," I heard my radio crackle. Reaching to my shoulder, I unhooked my hand-held radio device and pressed the call button.

"This is Sergeant Thompson, all clear here, over." I released the call button, and waited a minute for a response.

"Sergeant Thompson, I repeat, please report your status, over." I checked to make sure that my thumb was firmly pressing down on the call button, and when I pressed it, the familiar 'Cackle' wasn't there. I pressed it again to make sure I hadn't jammed it, and it still was silent.

"What the hell?" I murmured to myself. This was strange. Radio failures were very rare, and when the primary communications device went down, the secondary system always kicked in.

Suddenly the lights in the casino went out. There was a sharp gasp among the guests, and then there was utter silence. I immediately cupped my hands to form a megaphone, of sorts. "Attention everyone! There has been a minor power failure, and the backup systems will kick in shortly! Please remain c-"

The ground began to shake. I lost my footing and fell to the ground. When I stood up, I flipped on the flashlight attached to my M4A1 Assault Rifle. The tiny light pierced the darkness and allowed me to see a small area of the casino. I could already tell things were falling over, and pointing my flashlight towards the general direction of the crashing noises, those fears were confirmed.

Screaming filled the casino. Due to the earthquake I lost my grip on my rifle and I fell to the floor once again. Somehow my light had flipped on, and it was aiming directly in front of me. A giant bookcase was tipping, and if it fell, it would certainly crush me. There was no way I could move out of the way in time.

I was going to die.

The earthquake was horrifying. It measured an 8.7 on the Richter Scale, and nearly all of Las Vegas was wiped off the map. The government estimated over 100,000 people dead as well as more than a million injured. The damage was so bad that relief forces from nearby cities and states, which were also damaged, but not as heavily, couldn't reach the city until December 8th, 5 days after the earthquake happened. Fires broke out throughout the city, massive casinos and hotels burned to the ground, and The Strip was totally gone.

Other cities were attacked, but in different ways. In New York City, a riot had broken out nearly 2 months earlier, after NASA said Nibiru (Planet X) was not real. The U.S. and Canadian Armies were able to contain the violence, but not before a group of terrorists fired several missiles at the Empire State Building, and the Statue of Liberty. Both buildings were severely damaged, and repairs on them wouldn't even finish until late 2014. Obviously, the government wanted to postpone repairs of the two structures in case The End really did come.

In London, along with a riot, there were several attempted attacks on the London Subway. This caused British Authorities to shut down all public transportation, except for use by emergency personnel.

Baghdad was overrun by Iranian forces, and now, the entire country of Iraq was under Iran's control. Iran threatens to fire nuclear missiles at the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, and Israel.

And last, but most certainly not least, Israel was attacked by unknown forces on the eve of December 9th. Bombs were dropped on the city of Tel Aviv, as well as Jerusalem. Israeli forces were baffled when they learned that not a single ship had been fired upon by their own troops, yet, they were exploding in the sky like crazy. Despite the attacks people were still flocking to the city of Jerusalem to find religious sanctum for when The End would supposedly come in 10 days.

I clicked off my projector. Certainly there would be at least minor damage to it, but I wasn't sure if it would be permanently damaged due to being left on all night. Throwing on a shirt I walked downstairs and into the den, where my family was sitting on the couch, staring at the news on the TV.

It was funny. Being a Junior in high school I normally would've been getting ready to go to class at this time of morning. But after the attacks on New York City, all public and private schools were immediately shut down until further notice. To tell the truth, it was nice having a vacation from school for a long time. But I certainly wouldn't want all these attacks to happen.

I took a seat on the couch next to my older brother Kenny. He didn't say a word as his eyes were glued to the TV screen like everyone else. Taking the remote off the table, which drew a small argument from everyone watching, I simply turned up the volume and listened to the President of the United States, Barack Obama:

"My fellow Americans. It comes with great sadness that I report to you that another disaster has taken place in the United States, this time, in New Orleans, Louisiana. Earlier this morning a plane en route from Reagan International Airport in Washington, D.C. to George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston crashed into the Superdome, at approximately 3:37 A.M. local time. So far it appears that all 237 passengers and crew aboard the flight were killed, as well as at least 30 people on the ground in New Orleans. This brings the death toll to 267, and it is very possible that this number could rise to over 300.

"At this very moment, U.S., Mexican, and Canadian troops are stationed in various cities around North America. As of this morning, the continent of North America has been combined into one country, so all 'countries' in the continent are being asked to provide their own forces in areas where the North American Government deems it necessary. Please, if you live in any city where military intervention is requested, comply with troops' orders, or you will be detained.

"I ask that all Americans, whether you live in what was Mexico, Canada, the United States, or any other country in North America, to please hope and pray that this disaster ends soon. We do not know if the end of time is upon us, but at this time, it certainly seems that way. Thank you, and God Bless."

Kenny muted the TV. "What are we going to do?" he asked.

"We're going to stay here, that's what," my older brother Tim replied, holding his wife's hand.

"I don't think so, it looks like things are getting worse all across the world," my oldest brother Alan commented. "We should think about going to a more secure area, this house might not withstand an attack."

I tuned out my family as they discussed what to do. I didn't want any of this to happen, all I wanted was to be with my friends in class, talking about how dumb all the newest pop-stars were, and how hard our Calculus tests are. This was the worst thing that could possibly happen.

8:33 P.M.

Washington, D.C.

I nervously walked into the Situation Room. My Cabinet rose to attention, and the Marines in the room saluted me. I took my seat at the head of the conference table, and everyone else followed suit.

"Ladies and Gentlemen of the Cabinet," I spoke with a sense of power, as well as fear. "Along with our leaders from Canada, Mexico, and other nations in North America." The group looked to the section of the long table that had three representatives from each country. "It is with great sadness that I inform you that..." I took a breath. "The End of Time is here."

There was a sharp gasp from everyone in the room, including a few of the Marines. A quiet murmur began, until I raised my hands for quiet. A hush blanketed the room.

"It appears that the disasters and attacks in the recent months and days have been far beyond what any human being could manage. I do not believe the natural disasters are a coincidence, and the terrorist attacks..." I took another breath. "They are being carried out by members of the Illuminati." Another gasp, but quieter this time.

Secretary of State Hilary Clinton raised her hand. "Mr. President," she addressed. I nodded. "Does this mean we are being controlled by a group of secret government leaders?"

There was a slight pause. "It appears...that is correct, Secretary Clinton," I said hesitantly. There was another murmur. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates raised his hand next.

"Mr. President," he said, "do we have any plans for military intervention?" I nodded my head.

"Thank you for your question, Secretary Gates. Yes, as stated previously, we have troops stationed around North America. Our Mexican and Canadian allies," I said, motioning to the foreign leaders, "have placed their troops hand-in-hand with ours. As of right now, all military units have been combined to form the North American Military Response Unit, or NAMRU. NAMRU will be directed by myself, the Canadian and Mexican Prime Ministers of Defense, as well as the Secretary of Defense."

"Other than that, our forces have completely withdrawn from all other countries, and have been relocated to high-priority cities in North America. We are in close contact with our Asian, African, and European allies, who are currently also working together to form the Europe-Asia-Africa Military Defense Force. They are being headed up by the European Union's President, as well as dignitaries from African and Asian countries. I have time for one more question before I must move on."

Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano raised her hand first, so I called on her. "Mr. President, what are we going to do about the Senate and House of Representatives?" she asked.

"Actually, I was just about to get to that part," I said, relieved I didn't have to answer another question. "The Presidential Nuclear Bunker has been redesigned to accommodate a large group of people, just for this occasion. We are asking all Cabinet and Congressional members to gather their most personal belongings, as well as their immediate family, and report back to the White House no later than 51 hours from this meeting. With the aid of Secret Service and U.S. Marine forces, we will seal the 12 water, bullet, fire, smash, and nuclear-proof doors, allowing us absolute protection. I ask that Cabinet Members go home as soon as this meeting is over, retrieve their families and belongings, and report back here. Once the 51 hour time limit is up, we will seal the doors, and unless it is vital that we open them, they will remain shut. Thank you all, Vice President Joe Biden will be issuing a statement to Congress shortly."

Washington, D.C.

Looking at all the faces of the people in the bunker, I felt somewhat at ease. There must've been over 1000 people in there, including Congress, my Cabinet, foreign leaders, as well as everyone's families. It might've been a little crowded, but we knew that this small group of people might be the last surviving humans on the planet. After checking and double-checking all the faces, it seemed that none of the Congressmen and women had failed to arrive before the deadline. This was a huge relief. Everything was going much better than I had anticipated.

We had enough supplies to last us a year. If we had to, we could send people up to the White House to recover any remaining materials we might've missed. But at that moment, what was important was just staying alive.

5:00 A.M.- 31 minutes until the End of Time

Houston, TX

Everyone was huddled close together. We were saying prayers, as many as we could. I had read the Book of Revelations twice that day. My two dogs and cats were acting like crazy, they were sniffing everything and acting extremely odd.

My dog was nuzzled up close to me. She let out a long moaning sound, and I looked over at her. "What's wrong girl?" I asked the German Shepherd. She blinked her eyes slowly, as if she understood the seriousness of the situation. Maybe she did.

At 11:12 the power went out. For good. It was only 19 minutes until the End.

6:00 A.M.- 31 minutes until the End of Time

Washington, D.C.

I looked over my nervous crowd of people. The electricity had gone out just an hour before, and people were starting to panic. Heavily. According to my wristwatch we had only 31...no, 30 minutes until the End. I kept my wife Michelle close to me, along with my two daughters. If we were going to die, we wouldn't die alone.

It looks like the End is here. At last. Soon we will all be gone.

5:30 A.M.- 1 minute until the End of Time

Houston, TX

A minute ago I heard a cry. It sounded like one of my cats. I couldn't tell.

My dog is acting very sick. She is laying on the floor next to me. Everyone is crying. Nobody wants what is about to happen, to happen.

Just a second ago I told my brother I loved him. He said the same thing back. It is so sad, I've never seen him crying like this.

My stomach hurts. I feel very sick. My head is pounding, my nose is stuffed up, and my eyes are burning from the tears that have welled in them. I don't want to be here. I wish this weren't happening. I want to go home.

My God. It's going to happen.

Nice job. I don't think I've seen a story where it's all written in first person, first person account from each of the characters as a journal. I can't believe I would have ever been that creative when I was 14. In fact, I think I was a brick. Well done.

One of the best stories I've ever heard. I've even broken my realm of scilence whilst waiting for a name change to say that. Incredible. And your only 14 did I hear?
