At ADISC, we take exceptionally strong steps to protect your privacy.
For example, as of writing (November 3, 2009):
- We have never granted any requests for user data, except requests made by our most trusted ADISC staff.
- Even among ADISC staff, access to user data is severely restricted. Only the senior staff have access to user data, and even then, only as absolutely needed to do their jobs. They may only use it to carry out their ADISC duties, and while doing so, they may not save copies of it, or share it with anyone except other senior staff members with a valid need to know.
- We have only once volunteered user data to someone outside of ADISC. Even in this case, we only disclosed data on a single user, and we only did so to local police, after our own investigation revealed that a child was in serious danger if we did not do so.
It isn't just the policies that protect you, though.
Actually, the whole site is designed to protect your privacy.
For example:
- When joining ADISC, the only personal information that we require you to enter is a username and an email address.
- While your username is necessarily public, you can can request that it be changed at any time, via your Control Panel (UserCP).
- Your email address is kept extremely private, and you can update it at any time. (see our policies above)
- We may ask you other questions when you join, but you can simply answer all those questions with "Private", if you wish. We even provide checkboxes to make this easy for you.
- More generally, you are in direct control of most of your data on ADISC. For example, you can edit your profile, or use privacy settings to restrict who can view it. You can edit or delete your gallery photos at any time, too. You can usually even edit the posts you have made for awhile after making them. The list goes on.
- Even in the cases where you aren't in direct control of the data you have uploaded (e.g: past posts that you have made awhile ago) you can still contact a staff member to request that details in them be removed. Once they are removed, you can use tools like Google Removals to also get the information removed from search engines.
All in all, ADISC is very, very serious about protecting your privacy.
That said, all of our efforts to protect your privacy won't do any good if you don't take the steps required to protect yourself.
Here are some tips on protecting your privacy on ADISC:
- Don't use the same username as you use on other sites. This one is a no brainer. Would you want your friends on other sites to Google your username and find your ADISC profile?
- Don't post your Instant Messenger username, or anything else that could be used to identify you, in any public area of ADISC. People Google Instant Messenger screennames as well, you know.
- Don't post your name, address, or other such sensitive information anywhere on ADISC. Even in private areas! Posting this sort of information is completely unnecessary.
- Don't use the IRC Chat if you want to protect your IP address. Due to the way IRC works, using it makes your IP address visible to the other people you are chatting with.
- If you have a privacy concern, please alert us promptly, via the requests forum.
