Depends on what you're doing. Laptops are great for someone who is in school, or uses the computer around the house, etc. They're not so good for people who game alot because when you buy, you're pretty much stuck with everything. Can only upgrade the ram and hard drive.

Desktops are better if you don't me computing in one spot because you can get a faster machine with more storage space for the same dollar. You also get a larger monitor (I've only seen 1 laptop with a 20" screen before, and I wouldn't really consider it a 'lap'top :P). You also get the ability to upgrade components whenever you need to. Repair is also much easier and cheaper on a desktop.

I use both, but my main computer (this one) is a desktop.

Depends entirely on what you want it for. Period. I can't vote until I have more information on what this laptop/computer is intended for.

If you move around a lot, do work on a daily commute, etc, get a laptop. If you only move around to a friend's place or a LAN party once in a fit, get a desktop computer. Ideally, have the best of both worlds if your budget will allow.

As a general rule, manufacturing costs for a laptop are twice that of a desktop computer.

If you let me know what exactly you want to do with the computer, I can help you find a good deal. (Hint: Dell or Macbook)

I need both. A laptop should be small with a good battery lifetime (<3 my X31) and the desktop should have some computing power and a big screen. I wouldnt want to miss either of them, but I chose the desktop as more important to me in this poll.

Yes, I am lucky to own both. I find myself mainly on my desktop, because its more conftable to use, with a proper mouse and keyboard with a half decent screen. Also, it has all my music on it (not that it stops me sharing it over the network).

But if you find that you are using any programs or games that are demanding, even with a capable laptop I wouldn't recommend it as with all laptops I have used their fans and put on full power, make allot of noise and need to be put on some kind of desk. And I usually bring extra peripherals, usually and USB mouse and keyboard, to make the operation easier to use.

But for homework and web use, you can bring a laptop around to your friends and all sorts. If you are like me. Sometimes, me and a few friends collect together in a room and play some games on them. Like 5 year old games. but still fun never the less. I use mine for mobile web when I am usually a passenger in a longish car journey. Having a phone with a data plan rocks!

But really its a case of, are you going to be needing a computer everywhere or not. As Desktops are cheaper and better to have. But Laptops only real plus is it's portability.

Also, if you do end up getting a laptop, look for one with a good battery run time!

Well, depends on how you use it. A friend of mine got laptop just to be able to carry it around at home, but mostly it sits on his desk. Waste of money in my eyes, but using it as dvd and music player around the house definately has its advantages with no need for a good battery. Just plain power is the argument when it comes to this kind of desktop replacement.

Depends on how much you want to spend.
A good laptop that you can run games on for 3-5 years 2k
A desktop 1k could get you a good one

Granted I much prefer my laptop. It runs better them my three desktops. And by that I mean gaming.

My first 3 computers were big regular computers, and then I got my first laptop, I will never go back to a reg computer again, not that I go anyplace with this one I have now, but I can if I want to.

It has just as much space as the big older computers, and works just as fast if not faster, I still have my first laptop, and I have no idea what I'm going to do with it, I keep the battery up, and use it once and awhile to update the XP, but it just sits on my kitchen counter if anyone would be interested in it, talk to me, it's a Toshiba Sattelitte A65-S1070 with XP and the recovery discs.

I'll assume, like the others, that by "computer" you mean desktop. I would say that if you plan on taking it around with you, get a laptop. However, if your plan is to set it down on a desk and never move it (I knew a lot of people in college who did this...), I would definitely go for a desktop. You'll get more bang for your buck, they are easier to work on, harder to steal, and you can have a nicer display.
