If the format fails again, try setting a new disklabel on it by using the Ubuntu LiveCD, going into the Partition Editor (GParted) and going to devices --> set disklabel.

If that doesn't work, then you need a new hard drive. I can pretty much tell you straight up from its age that it's PATA.

I installed a 512 MB chip in my Dell 1100 and it works just fine. I've been thinking about buying another one and switching out that one for the 128 MB one it came with originally to make it as fast as the desktop at home.

Just gotta make sure that your motherboard supports the amount of RAM you plan on putting into it. One of two things could happen if not:

The system just goes kaput until you realize it's the RAM and you take it out to make the system work again

Or

The system only utilizes the maximum it can. Like one of my old Gateway servers did -- if I put a gig into it, it would only use the first 512MB.

It looks like 1GB (512MB x 2) is the most the Inspiron 1100 Series laptops can take. According to crucial, it should have two slots for RAM, and each slot can handle either DDR PC3200 or DDR PC2700 speeds, with up to 512MB in each slot. It doesn't support dual-channel memory, however.

I was planning on buying another 512 MB RAM upgrade chip. Will the one you linked to work in my Dell Inspiron 1100?

Ok so I could not get my laptop to format useing a windows disk so, I found a Linux disk I had laying around. It ver. 5.10 which I know is way old, but it installed. It runs great. I would like to know were I can download a bootable linux disk that works. Evertime I download one it won't boot from start up.

Another thing I was wondering that has nothing to do with my laptop, is can u link to computers together using an Ethernet cable so on can share the others internet.

if it's computer to computer, you'll need a crossover cable as well as software that can do what you wish.

From my understanding, That's no possible, unless it plays about with the drivers.

Most modern hardware can do auto-negotiating where it can tell what speed and type of cable you are using. It should work it out. I have tried it out on even my cheapest hardware, I was surprised no Cross over cable was needed. I would try it before you shell out the chash on a cable, or if you want to it the quick way. All you need is to use an ordinary cable, cut it in half and re-wire it. If I remember off memory, its orange to green? And the same with their respective grounds. [Googled it, yep, its correct].

5.10? Is that ubuntu, if you burning the disks is failing, read this https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto for help. It contains opensource windows software to use. So its all free and easy to get hold of.

It should. I ordered (a different) one just last week for my dad's Inspiron 1000, and had it up and working in about five minutes. On the off case that it doesn't, however, there is a guarantee, so they'll send you your money back if it isn't compatible. You don't have to buy from them, though, it's probably possible to find some cheaper memory on places like Newegg.com - Computer Parts, PC Components, Laptop Computers, Digital Cameras and more! or TigerDirect.com - Computers, Computer Parts, Computer Accessories, PC Components, & Electronics. I just like buying from crucial because of the guarantee.
