I went to a local baby store yesterday to find a new bottle, I wanted a Nubby. An older lady behind th ecounter asked me if I needed help and I asked where the bottles were and they didn't have the brand I was looking for. We chatted a while and I asked where the pacifiers were and she walked me over to that section on the other side of the store and asked what age child it was for. I avoided the question and told her I wanted the largest one they had. She showed me their selection and asked if a 18+ month was what I was looking for and I told her I was looking for something larger and pulled my nuk size 5 out of my pocket and showed it to her. I told her I was looking for a similar sized one and she told me they didn't carry them, but that the local childrens hospital had them. She told me her daughter was 6 and when she went there they gave her one the same size. She also informed me that I could find them on the internet. I thought it was really cool she was so well versed in oversized pacifiers.
I wonder if she ever figured out it was for me. I had on my babmino classico diapers, while walking around the store with her I could hear it rustling.
Now I jsut need to find someone who works at Valley childrens to get me a pacifier.
Anyone have any similar situations?

She might have thought you had a younger sibling or a chld that was of appropriate age. As for the diaper rustling, the only reason why we hear it is because we're listening for it and know we're wearing diapers. Most people are oblivious of 90% of the sensory input that hits their brains. Sad, but ultimately true. On the bright side, that's why I never worry about being found out in public.

Oversized pacifiers are a therapy device used for children with swallowing or speech problems, I think. My aunt, being a social worker, is quite educated on those sorts of things. (I know from previous conversations between her and my mother, who is an autism specialist.) So it's probably more common knowledge than you think.

She probably didn't figure it was for you, but perhaps a younger sibling/relative who had a need for a paci. And for your diaper rustling...yeah, she didn't hear it most likely. You just heard it because you knew you were wearing.

This makes me wonder if there are any medical stores that might carry the larger size used as therapy. Would be cool to walk into a store and buy one.

FWIW, this isn't 'sad' it's a very good thing. We wouldn't be able to function if we had to consciously process everything...our brains can't do it.

Hmmm...I'd agree. Our brains are made to tune irrelevant things out and to focus in on things of interest at the time. Of course irrelevant to one brain might be relevant to another, so it's all a matter of personal thought processes. People wouldn't know what was going on half the time if they were bombarded with everything and couldn't tune into what they needed to at the time. It's like first walking into a crowded room and hearing only white noise until you catch the voice of a person you know. All of a sudden you can hear what they are saying. Or people that tend to get lost in music becoming oblivious to their surroundings when they put their headphones on (which I totally don't do *whistles innocently*). Not saying this is good or bad, but it's how we work.

Plus, even though you can hear it, doesn't mean the people around you can, even if they were tuned in to everything. If you wear in public, you are (most likely) hyper sensitive and paranoid and think the noise is 100% more noticeable than it really is.

But back to the op's story. Interesting, but I am 99% sure she had no idea it was for you. Most people have no idea grown people like to wear diapers and be toddlers/babies, what have you. So they aren't looking for it. She probably just thought you had an older child that still needs/uses one for whatever reason.

A doctor prescribed a pacifier for a friend of mine because she bites people a lot but got mono, so no more biting. She used it for a month after she got better too.


Oh, and along with the listening conversation, think of it this way. Could you feel the cloths you were wearing before you read this? No, only until reminded do we feel it again. It's called sensory awareness, and it exists so we don't suffer a sensory overload.
