I was going to respond with something that could get me negged (more than likely), but I just won't respond (other than this)
Spam posts? I like how you totally post in every thread saying stuff along the lines of "My post count rapes yours." and such is usually nothing to do with the post at hand. Anyhow. I'm not making this thread about you and giving you more of an excuse to spam. If you have a problem with my opinion, PM me.

I'll respond once more...Have you noticed that I only say sentences along those lines, when the thread, or a previous post is related to it? It's not like I say it on every thread...And it's true...If that's a huge problem for you, then maybe you should stay away from the internet

I'm not responding to this argument on this thread anymore

I agree that without rep, the meaning of the post count is questionable. He's posted X amount of times, so what?

But I don't think we have a problem. I like to see people's post counts, I guess what Error404 said is right: it gives you an idea of how much they post when compared with their join date. (Although maybe posts per day would be better than?)

But, it's not like I care.

As for Post-whoring, well constant one-liners are annoying, as is posting for the sake of posting.

It would be cool to have information one what forums you're posts are distributed, oooooooo we could have a graph!

In fact we can do that ourselves if we really cared, by searching in the advanced search for posts by us in certain forums.
E.g 145 of my last 500 posts were in the Admin stuff forum:

Yea! Lets get a graph! Just for the fun if anything...

Anyway, I don't think it is needed. I think it would be cool if anyone actually cared, but I highly doubt people care so much that they would look at it for reference. People take people for face value here. Newer people will look at members for what posts they see, they will not care enough to go search which user is most useful- if anything, at most, they would go to the wiki.

Members are people. Some people like some people, others do not. Personality still shows, just because you are behind a computer does not mean you can not be judged and does not mean that your annoying habits or loving ways will stay anonymous. If you are one that shows off your post count/thread count/ reputation ect. and boast it, telling everyone how great you are, you might come off as an ass, which you probably are. If you take time to write a great response to someone freaking out because their parents found their stash, then you will mostly come off as a nice caring person.

I do not think we need any more attachments/upgrades/bullshit. It is already too much. If we keep stockpiling our forum it will overshadow our purpose...which we still have...right?

i usually don't pay much attention to my post count, except when i pass a major milestone like 1,000. then it's like an anniversary, and i can marvel at the fact that i've made a thousand posts on adisc.

people who are getting all upset about pojo's post count are obviously attributing way too much importance to their own post counts. it shouldn't be a penis-size contest; frankly i'd be a bit embarrassed to have a gigantic post count because it would call into question whether i have a life outside of adisc. i don't know what people are talking about when they say pojo spams to boost his post count; ADISC has a few REAL spammers, and compared to them pojo's posts are the paragon of relevance.

most likely the notion that we should all compete to see who can get the biggest post counts on a forum was originally introduced into the internet by forum owners and admins who wanted everyone to post as much as they could and make their sites seem more popular. seems like a stupid prioritization of quantity over quality; it's disappointing to see people buying into that notion here.

Even if everything was done there are tons of posts a day to keep up with it would already require 5-6 people (as you have to make a decision on EVERY post)

Nice idea but I don't think it's feasible.
Or necessary. You are spot on about the subjective nature of all of that, and like Lukie said "

by the time people here reach 1000 posts, the community usually is able to form an opinion of them because they are somewhat prominent and "out-there" on the forum.

However, more so, people here form opinions based on the how the person behaves and responds on the forum. I think post count is a largely irrelevant feature, but for tradition sake, all forums tend to have it.
"

I think this is getting rather out of hand in that it started as an analytical question and has devolved into something less... savory.

Isn't one of the purposes of a forum for people to get to know each other?
When I read a post that doesn't contribute to a thread then I've learned something about the poster.
Unless pointless posting is more problematic than a few ruffled feathers what's the harm?
