I honestly fail at describing myself in such few words that it would reflect me properly and fit into my profile. Sure, you can say what kind of interests you have in the AB/TB/DL field, but trying to squeeze a person's character into a few words is bound to fail. Plus people would be more or less advertising themselves and only mention their good sides, never their bad sides.

It's a lot more interesting to get to know someone from actual interaction rather than just reading some sort of resumé.

True beans!

On a similar note, I've noticed that when I've gone for job interviews, the employer has seemed more thrilled at the idea of employing me because I attached a cover letter on the front of my resumé, outlining more personal aspects about myself and not just handing over superficial facts.

How can you do job applications without a cover letter? Unless maybe it's for part-time student jobs that require only skills virtually everyone already possesses.

Hey, that wasn't nice. I feel sad now. I'm a busboy at Outback.

You may be surprised at the amount of people here who don't even know what a cover letter is, let alone submitting one with an application. My experience is that it's not required, but makes you look a hell of a lot better when you do attach one.

But that's just from what I've seen, it probably isn't nationally true. The water is different where I live.

Fair enough. I've never really worked in "typical" student jobs - I was mostly self-employed, tutoring students through most of my school / college career for money. And those students usually approached me, so I didn't have to apply for any kind of jobs.
However, if you want any kind of job that requires certified skills, you won't be able to apply without a cover letter. In fact, all the experts say that the company official won't even look at your details unless your cover letter makes her think you're worth spending her time on.

Yeah, but mentioning a few downsides can draw people away form talking to you. I agree 100% that you should get to know folks properly by interaction rather than the pretext that is a user's profile... but then don't you think the idea of having a profile is to make other users be all like "hey! they're into... whatever it is I'm into... I'm totally gonna pm them for a chat"... but in a less cheesy manner

I kinda thought that was the whole idea behind user profiles lol
